I can't claim to have seen/verified the siskin, which was picked up by Merlin. Not quite as whacky as the nightjar it suggested the other day, which was actually a lawnmower in the distance 😃

It has been a good day for birding so far today, totally as a by-product of other things. First the dog walk and woodpeckers. I then had to walk home across fields after dropping my car off for a service...

There's a lot of GSW near me. In fact, one widened the opening on our bird box and cleaned out a brood of blue tit chicks a few years ago. I have since put a metal ring over the aperture, but somehow the tits know and haven't been back. There's a telegraph pole about 5m from our bedroom window...

Thanks. As the crow flies, Birling gap to the Ashdown Forest passes directly over my house, so I'll keep an eye out :)

UK Chaffinch numbers down 30% between 2007 and 2018 and I suspect a lot worse in the last 6 years. :( https://www.bto.org/how-you-can-help/help-fund-our-work/appeals/chaffinch-appeal

These nightingales seem earlier than usual, which I guess is down to weather/temperature or maybe strong prevailing winds for their journey over. My guess is cuckoos are likely to be a couple of weeks earlier than usual too.

I've noticed a lot more thrushes this year (which is lovely). Still hardly any chaffinches in my garden though (used to be loads). There's at least 2 nightingales within a hundred yards of me right now. I'm trying to tempt them out by playing their song back to them - they will often pop out...

It's a real sign that summer's coming - I'm walking the dog and can currently hear a nightingale in full song. 😊

More sparrows than I can shake a stick at over here (house and hedge/dunnock) and the house sparrows are marauding little buggers that work their way through most of my veg patch. This gang seem to particularly like spinach! I do like the chatter from a group of sparrows though and as much as...

I might give these apps a go. I've used the BirdSong ID UK app before, but it really wasn't great. I tried it out in several instances where I knew full well what the birds were (I could see them too) and it got very mixed up, to say the least. I'm lucky enough to have a few reliable spots for...

Is it a stand-alone feeding station, away from decent cover? You should get more interest if the feeders are hanging from a tree, or close enough to trees or shrubs so there's a bit of cover. An exposed position leaves the birds wary of predation. We have flocks of goldfinches around us (just...

Not the best photo (taken with my phone and it was quite high above) but I saw this Red Kite over Chalvington the other day. There are also Lapwings at Lower Mays Farm in Selmeston. Plenty of nightingales audible in and around the green lanes of Chalvington & Ripe too.
