The NE Coast is always good for scarce passage migrants and vagrants this time of year especially if there have been strong North Easterlies - Unusual amount of RB Shrikes coming in. One of the reasons I moved to Norfolk - many arriving work their way down the coast and Norfolk gets a very...
I’m not a reserve warden - never have been.
Started birding and twitching rare birds in my teens. Have travelled all over the UK, Europe and North America on birdwatching trips - the best one I did was a two week migration survey in Greece at lake Kirkini - an amazing 175 species seen! Gave...
I agree it is sad. Birds, also use the Earth’s magnetic fields to navigate too and I did wonder a few weeks ago (and mentioned it as much) whether the particularly strong solar storm would impact migration in an unusual way.
That might explain why there is a Killer Whale off the Northern...
Beautiful colour bird - It is possibly an escape (from captivity ) so would have been condemned to a life in a cage - there was one in Holland too this week.
Unfortunately hundreds of wild birds overshoot migration or get blown off course by weather or even piggy bag legitimate migrating...
Sometimes people forget to consider how wars effect the environment- Ukraine is a particularly important country for biodiversity holding some of the best habitat in Europe providing home to some of our rarest species; especially around the Pripyat delta system (and around Chernobyl), Danube...
That’s a really good birding spot - I found a male Red-Backed Shrike up there one summer. Also good for Nightingale and both species of Whitethroat

I love Blackcaps singing too - woke up to one in the garden a few weeks ago.🙂
Nice selection but I’m very surprised that you saw a Siskin which would be a very interesting record - they are Winter Visitors to most of UK and back on their breeding grounds by now - there is a breeding population in UK but in the far north of Scotland.
Edit - should clarify there are...
I’m really fortunate to live and work in a rural area which means if I have time to take an hour’s lunch break at work, I get to do some birding. I also get to do it all on private land so no dogs or runners/cyclists, just the whole area to myself and very quiet and peaceful. Fish are spawning...
There’s a Hoopoe behind 3 Ponds Holiday Park in Denton which is just outside Newhaven )if anyone fancies a twitch. 😉). They are usually very confiding when feeding so a good photo op if you can find it.
I can’t help with the ID apps as I don’t use them - I learnt the old fashioned way with binoculars and field notes! 😎
Yes, your image is a Common Buzzard - one of the most variable species there is in terms of plumage. Note the broad wings ( Sparrowhawks and Kestrel have more pointed wings...
Herons and large gulls most definitely list high on list of predators but cold and wet weather can also take a toll - chicks get cold and fail to thrive.
The IoW birds are all satellite tracked but that data isn’t publicly available for security reasons (birds of prey, especially eagles are subject to persecution/shooting, egg theft in this Country and are very susceptible to disturbance around nesting sites so the the tracking data will be used...
Hi Eeyore
I’m in Norfolk
We have quite a few sightings up here. Some of birds this year have been immature wild dutch ringed birds and we’ve had a few IoW immature birds wandering up here. The two this month were one from Europe and an IoW bird. The Norfolk reintroduction project was...
Great isn’t it - had a small flock of Swallows and House Martins on the Nature Reserve at work last week - still too early for Swifts - when I hear those screaming then I know summer will have arrived 🙂
Hoopoe in one of the local gardens this week. The White-tailed Eagles we’ve had up hear...
Hi
No in Norfolk now but I used to see them quite regularly in Brighton on migration - best place is on the cliffs up by the Belle Toute Lighthouse ( at Birling Gap) in March/April or September/October. (Or Ashdown Forest if that’s nearer for you)...
