Although looking at the calling pattern, I think it will be December 2027 by the time the train gets to Newcastle.

This would be excellent. IIRC there used to be a long distance service to Manchester from Brighton many moons ago which ran maybe once a week as well as another Long Distance service to Great Malvern.

This is the sort of route innovation that the rail network needs to engage in.

Indeed. Why not get rid of the stop at Northallerton and add Preston Park?

The old services if I recall correctly were Brighton to Edinburgh and Manchester. These used to go via the West London line that passes through Kensington Olympia. They became delay central as it became easier to delay one long distance service continuously rather than multiple "local" services.

The target audience for the old services was oldies with big suitcases who couldn't manage changing trains in London, rather than football supporters, just to manage some expectations here.

As a kid we used the Brighton to Exeter trains to get down to Devon on holiday.

As well as Manchester I'm sure there was an Edinburgh service at some point. I remember working in Birmingham and getting to New Street to find a delayed direct service to Brighton about to pull in. Jumped on it thinking it would be easier than going via Euston (these were the days when you didn't have to worry about thich route / compnay your ticket was valid on). It took much longer to get back than if I'd gone via Euston as it trundled down through Oxford and then we had to wait for a change of loco somewhere near Kensington if I remember correctly.

2006 was the last one, I dropped a link to a website about the history on post #9. There even used to be a Manchester Piccadilly to Newhaven Marine service in the late 80s!

A bit like David Boon's infamous 'achievement' of 52 beers on a pre Ashes flight, Brighton to Newcastle without changing trains would provide a fantastic drinking opportunity.

Not to derail (thank you) this thread but, as a frequent user of them before the Channel Tunnel ruined everything, I’d love to research and write a book about the many old stations that used to connect rail connections to ferries: Dover Western Docks, Ostend, Calais, the little Newhaven one and that very stylish station building on the quayside in Dieppe, all gone or converted now.
