One thing I will say is that, as we all know, Tony Bloom is a professional poker player. Some will mistakenly think that means he's likely to take risks. But I think the opposite is true. You don't get to be a professional gambler by making risky bets. You get there by understanding the odds and knowing when to hold off and when to strike. Tony Bloom is absolutely not going "all-in" unless he is sure he has everything stacked up in his favor.

Having said that, Tony does seem to be making some big bets this transfer window. Which I believe he would not do lightly. He's not quite "all-in", but he's certainly putting a big stack of chips on the table. So personally, I find this very exciting.

Unlike poker, is the risk mitigated? In that there are many player ‘irons in the fire’, we may not come good on one or two transfers, but the many big resale wins more than cover that.

I wonder if we've accepted that to be consistently in the top 10, we need to be more competitive on wages and/or contract length? That might explain the speedy resolution so far?

What’s struck me is we’ve gone from parting company with the previous manager reportedly because of a lack of transfers, to splashing the cash. Theres just a part of me that feels the club wanted him to move on. To be honest I was happy enough with that.

Well exactly. That's why we don't go all out of just one or two big signings.

Even in the best of circumstances, signings are, maybe, 50:50 propositions.

Another vote for “the strategy remains the same, but the players we can realistically look at have changed.”

Getting good players to come to teams fighting at the foot of the division is tough. Getting players to come to a progressive team with a reputation for player development and an outside chance of a European adventure is easier.

Additionally, look at the way the board has recently been strengthened. We’re looking at how we strengthen and grow commercial revenue. It can’t and won’t always be an upward trajectory. Let’s enjoy this while we’ve got it.

And we’ve got money when even United (man & newc) are skint😂

I think part of it is WHO we're signing. We're getting in people that are found thru our data driven route rather than who the manager wants (Fati, Dahoud etc...). RDZ and TBMBE/ PBOBE could not see eye to eye on this.

That doesn’t describe a new strategy. Just one, with a minor blip where allegedly RDZ decided 2 of several recruits in a window.

Who said it did?

It's been made very clear that RDZ did not see eye to eye with TB and PB over the recruitment.

This thread raised the question “do you feel a shift or change is happening in our much loved and revered business model or are we just hoping things work out as they are and remain a solid EPL club but nothing more”.
Top down from TB and PB, have they changed strategy from the model of many years? Have they now upped the ante on spending so that our second XI can accumulate points?

The polar opposite of lower financial risk loanee and a free transfer. Asking whether Hurzeler is being backed with a big investment after the debacle of last summer’s window.

We'll know by Christmas.

Might be bottom half hunting for wheels that have come of and loads of Fab out threads.
Or top half and praising the recruitment model, Fab in, and hopes of another European adventure.

Time will tell.

Why would we need to wait for Christmas to see if the business model is the same or different..?

League position at Christmas won’t be a sure reflection of the model. The fact we’re able to recruit top and potentially top talent now, and attract one of the game’s brightest managerial prospects, whilst other clubs are shitting themselves over PSR/FFP is validation of the model.

We have bought some wonderful prospects, i.e. Minteh and Osman. But at the moment the only likely starter we have coming in is Mats Weiffer.

If we lose Pascal Groß we still need to replace his creativity in midfield, and also a right back. When those two spots are covered my Albion mojo will move up from 9.

As far as strategy I don't think anything has changed.
Like any good investor TB buys the best players his budget can afford at their lowest price, and sells the players when he is offered above what he considers their true value*.

*taking into consideration things like contract length remaining, players desire to move, the opportunity to fund multiple future 'value' purchases.

We've spent (so far) according to TM about 92m Euros on 5 players - of which Wieffer is 24, Minteh is 19, Yalcouye is 18 (assuming is 7m), Osman is 19, and ACD is 19. None (ACD has a handful of sub apps) have PL experience, all are young/teenagers (Wieffer aside) with potentially massive resale value.

Last year we spent 100m Euros on transfers (according to Transfermarkt) on 8 players of which 3 of those were free or a loan transfer so 100m on 5 players.

Whats the difference ?

There's no evidence apart from the timing ? that Albion are "going for it" . Remember we haven't sold any players yet...

I suppose one difference is that were in the middle of July and we might well still be making more signings

Yes. We might. But we signed 9 players last summer so would it be any different if we signed 8 or 9 players this summer.

There's nothing in the profile of these players that indicates a departure from the previous few seasons. Cucurella, Estupinan, Pedro in terms of ££, experience, age feel similar to Wieffer, Minteh ?

to be honest there's more evidence to suggest that this summers window, Albion is reverting to type when it comes to the model after last years RDZ hiccup.
