Still ploughing through Simul by Andrew Caldecott. It's worth the effort.

Anyone knw when the final book of the Dark Materials series will be published?

I am impressed by your capacity to get through books. How is your retention?

I like to wallow in a book, especially if the plot is complex. Finding time to read is hard for me unfortunately. I put physical activity first (necessary as I become increasingly decrepit :lolol: ).

Fiction: The War of Don Emmanuel’s Nether Parts by Louis de Bernières

Bought after reading Notwithstanding by the same author, which was excellent. He also wrote Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, which was shite of the highest order, but don’t let that put you off. Genuinely excellent.

Non-fiction: Vassal State (How America runs Britain) by Angus Hanton. Recommended by somebody on here (apologies, I’ve forgotten who) and I thought I knew that a lot of American multinationals owned our popular brands, but it goes quite a lot deeper than that. I keep waiting for it to veer off into tinfoil hat territory, but so far it’s been reasonably dry and factual. A bit depressing in places, and frankly may change your view on the strength of our parliament and sovereignty. I’m halfway through and at present would recommend.

The Body - Bill Bryson

If you look back on this thread I read this around 4 years ago, like a good French wine this book has matured brilliantly, Bryson has sadly retired from writing, this is a remarkably fantastic literary final swansong.

Lancing By Sea
The Way It Was - Stanley Matthews autobiography

This is a fabulous book that is written by the great man not long before he passed away, so there are contemporary references as well as terrific descriptions of what it was like being a footballer in the 1930s

The best book I've read since The Don, the biography of Don Bradman of the same era.
