If it was a straight one on one then I would agree but whe Igor was backtracking, he had three players running at him I think he was trying to hold up the attack without over committing and giving a simple pass. Hindsight says it was the wrong decision but that just adds to the multiple wrong decisions that ended up with Wolves equalising
I think this is exactly what he was doing - and indeed, did. When the shot came, JPVH had got back between him and the goal, and another defender close by. They were nowhere near when Igor started backing off. You could actually say he did the right thing, and if it weren't for an unlucky deflection it would have probably stayed out of the goal.
As per my earlier post. The two Wolves players ran in the same direction, even if the ball had been slipped to them it was a worse angle plus JPvH had a good position, to stand off was just not on option.
I agree with the backtracking, but you have to engage as they hit the area, it’s just the correct thing to do….
You’re right though, there were multiple wrong decisions, that was just another.

Failure to properly improve the overall defence in the trf window, giving us more experienced options... that's why we are currently looking shaky in parts of all our games.

It amazes me how many people have tried to blame Igor because he didn’t come out on top in a 3v1.

This simply isn’t true. JPVH actually wasn’t positioned well at all, and the Wolves attacker to the left of Cunha came across and took him out of the equation, leaving Cunha and the player to his right. It Igor presses Cunha, he slides it to the right and that player’s has an even better chance than the one he scored from.
Quite frankly, Igor (and the other defenders involved in this transition) did almost nothing wrong. The issue was at the other end. But for some reason people have decided that fashioning some form of blame for Igor, even though it’s totally unwarranted, makes more sense than blaming the player whose school boy mistake cost us 3 points and left us exposed to an easy counter attack.
I think you’re completely missing the point if that’s your take on the discussion, it’s about closing a player down earlier.
Two of the players ran in the same space, at a wider angle, he did well until that moment.
He had to step forward.

It was impossible to miss for a player at that level, or at least it should’ve been. And he didn’t need to pass it immediately anyway. I honestly can’t believe people are still trying to fashion a defence for his moment of ineptitude.
The best we can do is accept it was awful, it cost us 2 points, and hope that he moves on productively and improves to a level where he’s good enough for the Premier League.

Its absolutely correct if igor closes and the ball goes wide JPvH is positioned forward of the back post and has visibility, Wolves meanwhile are shooting from a more acute position

He didn’t have to. He had to stall the attack as long as possible before getting support. He was outnumbered. All jumping in does is potentially give away a penalty.
Let’s say a good pass is made. Keeper comes out saves and kicks long to the left. Same result and they score on the break. Yes the pass was terrible but there is no guarantee we score. We still needed to be ready for another attack and we weren’t. The whole team is to blame for the goal.

It's fair to lay the blame on him for misplacing a pass which prevented us from scoring the third, but it's not his fault our other players decided to sprint forward to create a totally unnecessary 4vs1 situation leaving us outnumbered behind and Estupinan abandoning the defence running forward to no where.
Which he did, but when a player enters the area you go towards them to reduce the angle of the shot, it’s not about diving in, it’s about closing down. Igor was too deep.
As per my other post worst case scenario, Cunha plays in his teammate on the outside who is coming at a worse angle with JPvH in the middle well positioned….
You’re right though, the loss of possession cheaply is the biggest issue.
