It's not possible for a player who isn't known for his defensive prowess to not track back enough and instead concentrate on the wing bit of the wingback position?

I just maintain that there was no difference between Adingra playing in front of van Hecke and Adingra playing in front of Veltman.
And if we were playing wing backs, what the hell was Mitoma doing hugging the left touchline all game?
I need more convincing we weren't playing our standard 4-3-3

It very much looked like three at the back to me but I'm not going to argue the toss about it, it's too late in the day.
Whatever formation it was, that side of the pitch was woefully exposed with Adingra not doing his defensive duties and JVPH looking isolated and uncomfortable

Fully agree with the last point... he looked horribly uncomfortable... because he's not a right back....

The worst incident with Adingra was when he was beaten by oily git Traore. The commentator suggested he dropped his shoulder nicely. In reality he just stepped back the other way in slow motion and Adingra was rooted to the spot.

Well, Lewis Dunk thinks it was a back 3 (and they "worked on it all week") - from 4 mins 15 secs here:-
No doubt Hurzeler’s going to get some stick but switching formation was a reasonably logical decision to reach, pre-match. No Veltman, Ferdi or Hinshelwood. Lamptey never convinces as a conventional full-back. He’s got two centrebacks playing really well and our best defender for many years ready to return so 3 at the back looked a potential solution. Wasn’t great (although - mistakes aside - thought we looked no less secure than usual until late in the game, when it changed anyway).
Lamptey at wingback might have been more obvious but then people would have moaned about all the attacking talent left out.
Fab tried it. Didn’t get the result this time against a good PL side. May try it again if circumstances dictate that we can’t put out a strong back 4.

What did you think? I looked at the heat maps and van Hecke's screams 'right-back'. Estupinan seemed to be in exactly the same positions as he ever is, and linking up with Mitoma exactly the same as he always does, I couldn't see any change in his role to become 'wing-back'. Mitoma was hugging the wing as ever. Adingra meanwhile was very advanced, it tended to be Baleba shifting out right more to support defensively, and perhaps the change was more in the centre with O'Riley playing a lot deeper than the 10 normally plays in our system, meaning it was more of a midfield three than two.

I know. Its weird (but clearly just to me
)If you play a back three with wingbacks you expect a change on the left side as well as the right, but Estupinan and Mitoma were just normal Estupinan and Mitoma.
Its OK if you don't care about this, we still lost regardless
