They sometimes have to change the stories due to logistical reasons (one of them goes back to 9/11 in NYC, and back to present day Brighton, for example) or for plot reasons (so that it can still air during prime time, as some of the scenarios are too extreme/potentially upsetting for that programme slot). Obviously, also they need to fit it into 90-odd minutes so have to change/drop sections. The changing of names (e.g. city centre car parks, or Devil's Dyke to Hobb's Dyke, for example) is done for legal reasons portraying them onscreen, especially if for instance a dead body is found. I've been a good friend of "the real life Roy Grace" for decades, well before the books were even thought of. He's always been heavily involved with the books, and is an advisor for the TV adaptations.I know they take liberties when filming books but this is a completely different story isn’t it?
