I have a friend who during our student years (Oxford) lived near the river just west of Barnes Bridge and always had a party on boat race day. Watch the beginning on the TV, saunter down to the river when they were approaching Barnes Bridge to see them come through, then sprint back to the house to see the finish.

but one highlight was running along the bank the year that Cambridge sank! Great fun.

And to be fair, the amount of training and hard work that went in to a College first eight was significant, even in the 1970s. The amount of skill and technique is significant and the sheer hard work that goes in to flogging your guts out for over 4 miles and 17 or 18 minutes is quite something!

My brother lives on the lower richmond road about 3 mins. walk from the river. It's a great day out
if you have somewhere to go after. A sort of free event.

Totally agree. I love it. But Crodo must not be allowed to wallow in a bubble bath of self-indulgence and wa*king penguism.
He must be held to account for the fop he is :)
He can wallow in whatever he likes. So long as I have an ignore thread' button!

I said 'it's', not 'they're'. Even the Grand National is a lot safer these days though, and they can't do much more. If you want to stop horses doing the things they naturally do (running and jumping) fair enough. Not for me though.
Why do jockeys have whips?

I don't know. Why do jockeys have whips? Boom boom!
Next silly question, please.

FWIW, I think they should be made not to carry them, but that's not on your agenda for having a go at me, is it.

Not at all. You said I wanted "to stop horses doing the things they naturally do (running and jumping)". Can't see where being hit with a whip is any way natural. But you do you, I guess.

Also, intrigued to know why you believe jockeys "should be made not to carry" whips. Why do you feel that?

Why do jockeys have whips?
"Whips are carried first and foremost as an essential aid to horsemanship and safety. This is consistent across all equine activities which involve exertion on the part of the horse. "

They even have whips in the horsey mincing about competitions!

"The current design of the whip was developed with input from the RSPCA. The whip is foam-padded and energy absorbing, comprising a composite spine with a polymer surround, encased in thick foam padding."

Hope that answers your question.

Claptrap. It's still a whip designed to hit a horse.

Did Oxford win this year?
On the water? No.

In the race to spend the next fifty years ruining our lives like many previous Oxford students? Probably.

What a shock - having battled through to the final a new name is on the cup - oh no there isn't, its the same boring repetitive crap.
