"England is perhaps the only great country whose intellectuals
are ashamed of their own nationality. In left-wing circles it is always felt that there is something slightly disgraceful in being an Englishman
and that it is a duty to snigger at every English institution, from horse
racing to suet puddings."

I never place much value in Orwell quotes but this has always struck a cord with me. It seems particularly suitable for today.

Just heard on LBC that the C of E has postponed it until the 28th for some religious reason to do with Easter
The Church of England has set prayers and readings for practically every day of the year, liturgy. It is part of the calendar that there cannot be a Saints day in the week before Easter (Holy Week) and the week after (Easter week) therefore, poor old George, gets postponed until next Monday.
At least he gets remembered, even if it is late.

The great thing about being confident in your own Englishness is that you don't need to worry about celebrating days like these. Cool beans. And thanks for reminding me that it is happening.

Not sure why Google is saying it's the 28th April?

But the question would be, why do English folk feel that way ?

For me the answer was always that it was because many of those who do celebrate and laud England have attitudes that others don't want to associate with. I'm not at all ashamed to be English, I quite like it. But I'm guarded in my celebrations of such things due to many of those who lead the call to do so. Thus it gets a bit circular.

So I'll stay at home, have a cup of tea and a tut along with a little grump at the weather. A quiet nod to the land of my birth.

If a national day had a 'no dickheads' policy, I'd be along. Although might find myself excluded from such a day, but more for reasons of benign dickheadary.

I think it's bollocks, and I'm a left winger.

That explains it.

Anyhow, we don't need no prayers! Let's get rid of the Saint bit and just call it George's Day.

A bit like the national anthem (celebrating Royalty & God); if a national day had something in it I could identify with than perhaps I'd be a bit more excited. We are being asked to celebrate a man for whom there is no evidence at all ever set foot in Britain, let alone England, and his slaying of a dragon - which didn't exist.

It's not exactly inspiring.

For the Bard's birthday:

'If you cannot understand my argument, and declare ``It's Greek to me'', you are quoting Shakespeare; if you claim to be more sinned against than sinning, you are quoting Shakespeare; if you recall your salad days, you are quoting Shakespeare; if you act more in sorrow than in anger; if your wish is farther to the thought; if your lost property has vanished into thin air, you are quoting Shakespeare; if you have ever refused to budge an inch or suffered from green-eyed jealousy, if you have played fast and loose, if you have been tongue-tied, a tower of strength, hoodwinked or in a pickle, if you have knitted your brows, made a virtue of necessity, insisted on fair play, slept not one wink, stood on ceremony, danced attendance (on your lord and master), laughed yourself into stitches, had short shrift, cold comfort or too much of a good thing, if you have seen better days or lived in a fool's paradise -why, be that as it may, the more fool you , for it is a foregone conclusion that you are (as good luck would have it) quoting Shakespeare; if you think it is early days and clear out bag and baggage, if you think it is high time and that that is the long and short of it, if you believe that the game is up and that truth will out even if it involves your own flesh and blood, if you lie low till the crack of doom because you suspect foul play, if you have your teeth set on edge (at one fell swoop) without rhyme or reason, then - to give the devil his due - if the truth were known (for surely you have a tongue in your head) you are quoting Shakespeare; even if you bid me good riddance and send me packing, if you wish I was dead as a door-nail, if you think I am an eyesore, a laughing stock, the devil incarnate, a stony-hearted villain, bloody-minded or a blinking idiot, then - by Jove! O Lord! Tut tut! For goodness' sake! What the dickens! But me no buts! - it is all one to me, for you are quoting Shakespeare.'
