Agreed on this.
Feel free to DM away, @Harry Wilson's tackle
As @Albion in the north says, a gout attack can be months, even years in the making. The thing I actually found quite useful after my first attack is that I'd sometimes get twinges in my toe as a kind of warning sign, and sometimes...
Everyone seems to work a little differently.
All I'll say for me is that since I've cut out alcohol, I've barely felt even a twinge in the last year or so, after a number of years of sporadic attacks. I'm not on any preventative medicine now either.
And I was never a big drinker, but it was...
Just a quick update - finally got over a really nasty bout which lasted about 5-6 weeks overall and caused really big swelling in the knuckle of my big toe, if you get me.
I wanted to wait until all the last twinges had receded before going onto Allopurinol for the first time - so starting it...
UPDATE - this attack has been a right nasty bugger.
We are talking over a month ago now. It had all but subsided (finally) in the last few days then last night it has suddenly started turning up in the ankle.
I guess I just have to keep on the water, cherry extract tablets, nurofen, emulgel...
Thanks everyone for wise words and shared experiences. It’s really, really appreciated.
Things like this can get you down and make you feel like you’re the only one going through it, so it really does help to hear from others who understand. (y)
Yes - this happened to me, Gout seems to hit when my immune system is low/struggling with something else (previously Gastritis, kidney stones, all great fun).
What a fun thread to bounce.
Well into week 2 of a pretty rubbish bout of this right now. Followed about a week after a bad acid reflux episode.
Doctor has now prescribed Allopurinol (along with blood tests to keep a track of uric acid levels), I was just a little cautious about;
A> Once...
Well done for laying that all out spongy - and don’t beat yourself up too much, sounds like you’ve had a really tough situation recently. Hope it improves really soon, it’s a horrible pain. Mine is usually in the ankle bone but occasionally in the sole as well.
I had a recent flare up of gout...
The problem for me with both Naproxen and Alluprinol is that I have long term Gastritis and so on doctor's orders I cannot really take anti-inflammatories, or not too many anyway...
Thanks everyone for your contributions.
People saying it's worst pain they've ever known - I think acute (exposed nerve) toothache is a close one, and probably worse.
I have been hugely dehydrated over the past few days (very stressful house move, dicky tummy) so that's most likely the main cause this time. Last night was agony, couldn't sleep a wink. Cocodamol is taking the edge off of it slightly. Was hoping to go up to London on Friday to see Interpol but...
GOUT. Just seen docs and looks like I've got it. Pretty severe pain through last night, couldn't sleep a wink. Anyone here had it? How long did it last, and what did you find helped ease the symptoms?
Cheers NSC.
