A mate sent me a text message last night saying Alan Gunn the Referee from Sussex has sadly passed away:(

Does anybody else know anything about this?

This is, unfortunately, true. His wife used to work for my Mum and still keeps in touch. I'm not quite sure of the circumstances, but I'm fairly sure it was heart-related and possibly whilst he was at the gym. Cant quite remember what my Mum said last night. He was a really great guy, and even got me a Spurs programme signed by Gascoigne back when I supported Tottenham in 1990, completely out of the blue.

He'll be sadly missed.

A mate of mine used to work with him at Batys in Burgess Hill and reckoned he was a really nice bloke.

Very sad news indeed.

This is sad. He was from Chailey wasn't he?

I seem to remember that he officiated the FA Cup final in 1990 when Palace played Manyew. He must have found it difficult to be impartial!

I'm very saddened to read this.

I used to work with Alan at Batys in Burgess Hill. He was a great bloke and a great friend at the time.

When we got to the cup final in 1983, I was ill when the tickets went on sale and missed out on getting one. Alan knew I was a genuine supporter and had only missed two Albion games - home and away - in the previous 4 years, so he contacted the club and used up a lot of favours to get me a ticket. I'll never forget that for as long as I live.

He wasn't immune from pulling the odd stroke or two either. I remember he was given a cup game to referee in the mid 80s, it was Liverpool against Crewe I think. He told us all at Batys it was going to be a dead cert 0 - 0 draw and to "put our shirts on it."

Sure enough, it was a 0 - 0 draw - with Alan disallowing 4 Liverpool goals. :lolol:

RIP old friend.
