I think anybody with deep religious beliefs who DOES wear a rainbow armband is a hypocrite.

Why do we have to tell people how they should think? He should be free to believe whatever he wants, however abhorrent those beliefs may seem to the rest of the population.

Agree, but as others have pointed out he doesn’t appear to have issues with gambling companies being advertised on shirts.
He seems to have cherry picked what his religious beliefs forbid him to do. Supporting the sin of gambling okay, homosexuality not. Twat.

Happy to wear shirts with gambling logos on though.

That said, people should have freedom of choice - don't want to end up like the Poppy Police.
Oh the irony.

I think he's a prick for his 'religion'.

I think anyone with deeply racist beliefs who refuses to shake hands with a black man is a hypocrite.

Some times not being a **** is better than not being a hypocrite.

To be clear, if he refuses to engage with rainbows that's his business.

And if people infer he's a homophobic prick, that's our business.

He was signed to play football and not to deliver cultural messages, however relevant and right they are (such as this).

Even for causes I fully support, sometimes I feel that the Liberal Puritanism in society is becoming a blanket doctrine that marginalises those who may not always agree. It makes me uncomfortable seeing it, even though I am fully onboard with most of the messaging.

If I had a discussion with him about being gay I would tell him he was wrong, and why I thought his religious beliefs were wrong. But I would always champion his right to be wrong (in my opinion). You do not change society to change people, you change people to change society. And that comes through discourse, not forced observations.

The football league knows full well that when it comes to poppies and rainbow laces etc there may be players who are uncomfortable. If it is that some refuse it should respected. If it is an issue, then just don't sign them.

If Ipswich's position is to support the Rainbow Laces campaign then the solution could have been that another player was made captain for that game who would wear the armband.

The approach they took would make me question the club if I were a gay Ipswich fan.
Same thing Sheff Utd should have done last season when Ahmedhodzic refused.

I salute your generosity while raising an eyebrow.

If this had been poppies, worn by every footballer, manager, cleaner, tea lady, presenter, cameraman and all, there would have been no variation from the theme of condemnation.

Since it's 'poofs' it seems that he should be cut some slack.

Bollocks to that.

It's the same to me but I can only speak as an individual here. How others respond is not my remit. I support both the wearing of poppies and rainbow laces. But I don't support the chagrin of those who attack players etc for opting out. It's when these things aren't seen as an option that I start to feel uncomfortable.

To me this is a non story. He simply has an outdated religious belief which I feel sorry for him being enslaved to.

And I also feel that some of those having a go outwith here aren't the sort to hold a rainbow flag during Pride Week. Motivation has many layers.

Good point.

Here's the thing. I grew up with an antipathy to the poppy phenomenon. I was 'persuaded' to give it another look largely by people on NSC. Two years ago I bought a BHA poppy badge. Last year I forgot. This year I bought one again. And I am happy to support the causes.

But when the likes of Alfredmizen stalked NSC, I was very uncomfortable with the strident attitude. Somehow I was a traitor for not Poppying.

Likewise, I'd feel irritated about being bullied into Rainbowing. But that's it. I'd feel irritated about being bullied. It isn't that I disapprove of Remembrance. It isn't that my religion teaches against Remembrance.

This footballer, like the one last year ats Sheffield United, doesn't feel feel bullied.

He intrinsically disapproves of homosexuality, because he imagines this is what Islam teaches. Very different narrative, and one that I deplore.

He is free to do it and I am free to boo him. Boo. BOO! Boo.
