Stupid Question (sorry) about linesmen!

Got something to say or just want fewer pesky ads? Join us... 😊

Sorry - may be a bit girlie!

When it is ht, do the linesmen also change sides of the field or do they stay on the right/left hand side?

I apologise for my stupid question, but I asked a couple of (male) mates and they had no idea.

Depneds on the referee I believe. There is no law to say thatthey should but some referees like to have the linesmen watching the same defence/strikers whereas others like to have the same linesmen in the same position.

Doesn't really answer your question but it definitely isn't a rule that they should switch.

BB - I shouldn't worry about asking "girlie" question s- from what I can see, you seem to have a far better knowledge than some people on here.

would have thought it'd be nice to have change of sides although it could be unfair making the decisions for the same team both halves. anyway, who cares
:glare: ???

Ta Seagulls over NZ. It all started as the linesman in the first half on the left side was absolutly terrible, and must have been a Palace fan! 2nd half was much better.

Thats the reason I believe why they don't change any more, so both sides get both lino's, its more fair apparently !! But your right BB they did used to swap over at half time !!

Linos normally take the left wing, the ref then runs the opposite diagional so that, in theory, he's always facing his linesmen for offside decisions etc.

The officials agree beforehand whether they'll swap teams at HT. Fucks up the side of the pitch though.

linesmen go down the lett hand side looking from the goal and dont often change sides

Not true BR - depends on the referee's diagonal that they want to run. But the the left hand side looking from the goal is the favoured position and most players know this and are used to it. Every now and then when a referee is slightly different you can get the comical sight of a player appealing to the linesman who isn't there cos he's on the other side. Oh how we laughed.....

As a ref, I will attempt to answer your question

One of the linesman is dedicated as the senior linesman and one junior. The senior (in the old days) used to be the one to come on should anything happen to the referee. The senior would also look after the bench side of the field of play, handle all substitutions and keep a record of bookings should he be required to take over. Now that 4th officials have come in to the game, they are still required to take over, but substitutions can be handled by this 4th official.

The referee will run a "diagonal" throughout the game and in most cases will be running left wing to left wing (but this is purely dependant on the referee) and need to keep his linesman in view at all times*, so hence he will run to the right back spot to look across at his officials. If the referee chooses, the linesmen can swap, it is purely their decision and not law in anyway.

* = keeping linesmen in view isn't so important these days, as each flag has a button on that when pushed vibrates a band on the referees arm. So, when the flag goes off for offside etc. the linesman pushes the button, the ref gets a shock and he knows the flag has gone up.

Hope this helps

It would be much better if the crowd could press a button and give the ref a shock every time he makes a crap decision.

We should get keypads like on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, with 4 buttons delivering increasing voltages depending on the incompetency of the decision. Imagine the state of the official after a game at a packed Old Trafford. It would really add interest to the game, and quite possibly improve the standard of refereeing (mainly for home teams). I think I might suggest this to the FA...

tis more fair to get a different one each half as BB says if one is crap at least each team gets the crapness fairly!!

In his case, i'd remove the safety trip which prevents complete electrocution...
