I work nights but this week am on a training course so am commuting into Brighton on the bus each morning.

Hell’s Bells! People really are mad, selfish, ****s aren’t they.

Speaker phone conversations, smelly food, farting, grunting, vaping, music out loud on their phones. And this is adults. Before the school run.

I don’t remember it being like this before Covid. The odd tut from behind a copy of The Times and a whispered, hurried phone call here and there but this is bonkers. A marked difference.



Why have people become so selfish and disrespectful of others?

I don’t like it out amongst the day-walkers.

The pandemic was a game-changer. Will it drift back to a ‘norm’ over time?

I see this a lot as I try to use public transport as much as I can as I really don't enjoy driving these days (aggressive driving everywhere as mentioned by @Weststander ).

They do it because they know that no-one is going to challenge them or say anything. And if anyone dared to say anything ... well, who knows what might then happen.

As you say, selfish and disrespectful ... all quite depressing really.

It’s not an attack on young folk. The cabal includes a load of belligerent older men and women. Unable to be polite, zero interest in the effect they have on others.

I put it down to a combination of many factors, but mostly technology and social media.

Many people are so absorbed in their internal worlds with their phones, headphones, social media and so on - that they have little interest in the people around them in the real world anymore.

I had to get the train from Brighton to Salisbury early on Friday morning, and back again in the afternoon. It was like an elaborate hidden-camera TV show testing my reaction to the endless, weapons-grade twattery of other passengers. I couldn't work out whether it's being oblivious to the impact behaviour might have on other people, or being aware and not caring. The worst was someone using some app at great volume, with a load of short clips (Snapchat maybe? Dunno. I don't use it myself.)

Whether it’s old codgers with their ring tones or younger people with no headphones.

I have said something to people at times but it’s not worth the stress. Not when you’re then stuck in an enclosed space with them for however long.

One of the things which seems to have impacted me post covid and working from home, is that I have learnt to listen without paying full attention. This is really useful in an online world, where you can listen in on a call and only really focus on the relevant bits, whilst gettig on with other things.

I now find long journeys on public transport really wearing, in that my brain is processing all sorts of irrelevant conversations, which I have no interest in and can't properly tune out of. The answer for me is noise cancelling headphones and I can now get off planes and trains feeling much fresher.

It doesn't stop people from behaving like dicks, but it does lessen the impact. It might of course just be I am getting old.

... Or older people. My work phone is an iPhone, which definitely is not my choice. I don't play music on it but as Apple in their infinite wisdom decided to dispense with an earphone jack, I can't use my headphones on it. Which means that calls, voice mails and video clips that my company send me are broadcast to the world. It drives me mad, let alone the other passengers.

PS Just in case anyone says get bluetooth headphones, I have some but they're not Apple so don't work with the iPhone. I really don't see why I should fork out for headphones I don't want for a phone I didn't want in the first place

I think its also due to the south east becoming increasingly densely populated and as a consequence, the wanker/sq mile index has gone through the roof. Living in a perma congested area brings out the worst in people.

Don’t go to China then…….absolutely accepted practice there. Took a couple of train journeys that were horrific due to the noise in the carriage.

Also had this on a couple of recent plane journeys - once a solo adult watching something on a phone, the other a couple allowing cartoons to play at full volume on an ipad for their kid. In the second case they were asked to turn it down and that escalated into a bit of a row.
