Just went into King Alfred to go on the legendary water flumes and the lady said they had been closed for the last 6 years!!!

So, so gutted, they were childhood. So ahead of their time. Very upset to think I won't be able to slide down the black-hole again!

Closed due to weather safety concerns apparently...

Opened in 1986!

I miss those flumes too! They were great when I was a kid! Also what happened to the old bowling alley that was underground, or Megazone as it was last known as??!!

I loved those flumes when they opened.
OK, the shoddy joins meant it was like sliding down a series of razorblades that would gradually lacerate your back as the afternoon wore on, but WHO CARED ?

Not me. I thought I'd died and gone to Disneyworld.

Wasn't it some kind of paintball range, or laser-gun zapping place? Not been to the King Alfred for years now me kids are grown up. Yeah, what DID happen to the underground zone thing?

I learned to swim there, long before the flumes appeared of course.

URBAN myth.

Actually my mate was a life guard there from day 1 and it was not a myth the first job of the day was to crawl up each slide and check for razor blades.
