Worthing Aquarena

Would you be sad to see it go? I would be devastated. The place is like a temple to me. When I was a kid, there were five stages before graduation. 1: The outside paddling pool. 2: The indoor small pool. 3: the first (lowest) diving board in the big pool. 4: the second (middle) diving board. 5: the third (top) diving board. When I was at North Lancing School, we used to go to the Aquarena every Wednesday afternoon. We had the small pool; the older kids from Shoreham Grammar School had the big pool.
Does anyone remember The Lido, in Worthing, when it was an open-air pool? During its early days, it was filled with (filtered) sea water.

was talking about the Lido the other day to my girlfriend. I used to go there with my mate and spend all day there. We used to go the sweet shop and buy crisps and those giant chewy sweets.

Brilliant fun if it was raining too. The flies used to gather in the corners and I even remember the dolphins from Brighton dolphinarium being in there. Happy days

Dark and depressing place plus it was always cold both in and out of the water, had more fun climbing on the walls outside. Would love to see it replaced.

The Lido is a different story many a good day had there, would love to see it brought back as a swimming pool.

I remember the Lido - hated it. I remember when the Aquarena opened, it replaced the old baths in Heene Road. Then a few years later they had to close it for a couple of years because the people who built it had cut too many corners (concrete roof beams filled with rubble for example).

What's happening with the Aquarena then? Having lived in Brighton since 1991 I haven't been there since the 1980s.

When I lived in Worthing they were talking about spending something like £80,000 just to patch it up.

The whole thing is a concrete eyesore. They need to replace it, but then the cinema went 25 years ago and that hasn't been replaced.

Worthing Council are THE worst for leisure and amenities. They will let discos and pubs be replaced with flats every time. They have no idea whatsoever.

I used it a lot in the seventies as it was the best pool for miles.

Afraid its time for the Aquarena to go, horrible looking building. Very poor facilities. A new purpose built pool (with slides) and cinema complex is desperately needed in Worthing.

Agree with the comments about the Lido.

I think Worthing should be nuked!

Can't see the point of the dump.

I think you're right. Can the epicentre be Durrington, I can't stand even driving through that place.

I think the Aquarena needs to be replaced with an Olympic size pool, gym, etc, but I know fair well it won't happen.
Hence why there are so many fatties in this country.

Isn't there a plan to build a swimming pool and cinema (which I agree Worthing desperately needs) at the new development at Teville Gate.
