Five years ago vs. Today

Five years ago, we were approaching a new Millennium (okay, the millennium was really in 2001, but everybody celebrated 2000 as the big New Year).

This has got me being all nostalgic. Do you think that you are in a better or worse position than you were back then?

Could you imagine your life being the way it is now five years ago?

For me, in 1999 I was a second year uni student, enjoying what I was doing, going to loads of parties with cheap alcohol and lots of attractive and friendly women around. I also had plenty of free time and some good mates. However, being a student I either had no job or worked in shitty seasonal jobs and had little money and no car.

Five years later I've since graduated uni and am now in the workforce. Work is boring and the place is falling apart and our working conditions are slowly but steadily getting worse thanks to management/senior management, I have limited free time, there aren't many parties now days because people can't be arsed going out, no cheap alcohol, few attractive women around. Some of my best mates have moved away. The only positives are that I do now have money and a car, and I'm optimistic that I'll be moving to another employer soon.

Despite being finacially better off today, I was much happier five years ago. My life has moved "forward", but isn't necessarily better.

Ah well, that's the harsh reality of the world I guess!:)

So much has changed...

In 1999 I was working nights at the Eastbourne ASDA on an enforced year out from uni. No money, truely shit job stacking shelves, living at home, no decent spare time for socialising or football, bird lived 300 miles away... It was bollocks.

5 years on, I've just spent my first of what'll probably be a few years in Japan, in a fun, easy, job teaching, working with and dating beautiful Japanese women. Also earning a good wedge for my efforts and generally getting away with behaving like a student.

If I really think about it, these are probably the best days I've ever had. (Apart from being 7000 miles from the Albion of course...)

Well looking back it seems a long time ago. I've moved from my mums since then, got a job I like. As for relationships I'm still f***ing them up.

Generally I think the world is a worse place....

Five years ago I was 13 and at school which in its own way was nice with no real responsibilities, friends just around the corner etc.

Now I am 18 and in my first term at uni. Most of my friends of five years ago are still my friends, and I have made a load of new ones along the way. Uni life is fantastic; loads more great friends, some very fit women (though as a whole women are still a great source of confusion to me), cheap booze, great nightlife and generally everything student life should be.

So compared to five years ago my life is infinitely better these days:clap2:
