My old lady loves the stuff.

Pimms is a gin based drink (at least the one most widely available these days is) so for me it would always be adding Gin. Plymouth is best because it can stand up to the sweetness.

1 part Pimms No.1
1 part Plymouth gin
3 parts lemonade (NOT lo cal under any circumstances)
Mint (and Borage if you have some in the garden)
Cucumber slices
Apple slices
Strawberry (although I don't like it, some of the laydees do)
Lots of ice

Made up in a large glass jug and poured into generous tall glasses.

Yum - and a sure sign that Summer is here (at least for the weekend), Waitrose in Tonbridge had sold out of both Pimms and lemonade on Saturday night.

lol,TRHK. You sound like my Mum and Grann. They liked all the fancy fruit and veg in the Pimms, but it's a drink, not a bleedin' salad.

*laughing smiliey thingy*

Like Sangria though, it's actually not a particularly nice drink, so you have to bulk it up with some fancy stuff to make it worth drinking!

Mint is essential. As is cucumber. I thought there is usually orange in it as well TRHK? And I'm definetely not sold on strawberries - purely on an aesthetic level I think they'd look out of place!

The original Pimms didnt have all the fruit in it just lemon and then somebody started adding different fruits abd borage etc and it took off. It was originally numbered 1 - 6 (I think it was) all with different base flavours.

No 1 cup was the original - gin based. They added others based on whisky, rum, vodka etc over the years.

For me, Pimms isn't Pimms without the jungle. And it is a great Summer drink. Whether it's a good drink or not I couldn't tell you - it's so much part of a hot Summers day for me that I'm probably past being critical of it as an actual drink.

Interesting read about it here - Pimms

History of Pimms
Rewind back to a London oyster bar in the 1840s where owner James Pimm invented the thirst-quencher. Using gin, quinine and a secret mixture of herbs, good old Pimm served up the brew as an aid to digestion, dishing it out in a small tankard and the No. 1 Cup moniker was born.

After the Second World War, Pimms extended their range, using a number of other spirits as bases for new cups. Scotch lent its name to No. 2 cup while No. 3 used brandy, No. 4 rum, No. 5 rye and No. 6 vodka. Of these sequels, the vodka cup and brandy (now called Winter) are the only ones in production while original No. 1 cup still reigns supreme in popularity.

Pimms Recipes

Traditional Pimms No.1
Take one slice of orange, lemon, apple, cucumber per person and one sprig of mint and add to two parts lemonade to one part Pimms.

Turbo Pimms No.1
As above but five parts lemonade, two parts Pimms, one part gin.

English Passion Pimms No.6
Take a shaker 2/3 full of ice and add 50ml of Pimms No.6, 25ml of Zubrowka vodka, flesh and juice of a passion fruit and a dash of sugar syrup. Shake well and strain into a tumbler full of ice. Garnish with a sprig of mint and two short straws.

Maximum Voltage Pimms No.6
Take a shaker 2/3 full of ice, 50ml of Pimms No.6, 25ml of Zubrowka vodka and 25ml of Cointreau. Shake well and strain into a highball full of ice. Fill with soda water and garnish with mint. If mixing your own Pimms sounds too much like hard work, head to one of the many pubs and bars in London which serve up Pimms with a healthy dose of fruit, ice and garnished with a sprig of mint.

Interesting to note that none of the Pimms recipes have borage in them.
