There have been plenty of threads on NSC about individual podcasts but I thought it worth trying to bring these strands together. First of all, a shout out for a new podcast called Libero currently featuring Jonathan Wilson, Rory Smith and John Brewin. Still a bit chaotic but all the better for it as there are no annoying ads. The current episode features a chat about Brighton and the new phenomenon of 'middle class' Prem clubs. It’s my favourite format for 'serious' football pods - a group of middle-aged journos from the less tabloid end of the media spectrum, chatting earnestly and not agreeing all the time.

I listen to a ton of podcasts, including many football ones. My current playlist includes: Guardian Football Weekly, Totally Football Show, The Game (The Times), Football Cliches, various pods from The Athletic, The Lars Resort, Not the Top 20, What the EFL, The Rest is Football, The Gary Neville Podcast, Seagulls Social, and Second Tier. I don’t listen religiously to all of these but pick and choose. I’m also keen on the reruns of Quickly Kevin, especially the hilarious readings of the Steve Barnes (aka Steve Bruce) Trilogy.

My weakness is Schadenfreude listens. When Chelsea lose, which is hearteningly frequent these days, I love to listen to the fanbase tearing its collective heart out and screaming in agony and rage. The Chelsea Echo, Chelsea Fancast, London is Blue, At the Bridge, are all glorious examples of a hysterical fanbase, and there are plenty more. The outpourings of grief and anger after the two Brighton defeats are among my favourites ever, especially as they universally hate and despise Albion for being Boehly's model club. They say they hate us for being a tinpot club but really, they hate the fact that we do very well what they do very badly. I do the same with Tottenham after defeats though there are fewer of them (pods, not defeats). A View from the Lane with Danny Kelly is particularly funny to listen to. I sometimes catch pods from fans of clubs who we're just about to play as I find their previews and perceptions of us interesting, and often flattering.

Podcasts I DON'T like are Football Ramble and anything too blokey that just features a bunch of mates guffawing loudly over things that aren’t funny to an external audience. There are plenty of those about.

Anything very obvious I’m missing?

I like the Ripple effect and Football between the lines (despite the Crystal Palace supporting co-presenter)
But I also like Football Ramble and cannot stand The rest is football, so we may not be on the same wavelength.

Thanks for the heads up ref Libero - Jonathan Wilson and John Brewin are two of my favourite writers/podcasters (although I find Rory Smith slightly annoying!)

Like you, I do the Schadenfreude bit - I've become slightly addicted to "Talking City", which is rather under-stated and reflective about the travails of Citeh.

I very much enjoy The Price of Football - apart from the friendly Albion/Palace banter between Keith Day and our resident Dullard, the depth and breadth of the podcast is impressive (as is the frequency.....those guys (esp Kieran) certainly put in the hours!

Closer to home, I'd love to say something nice about the Albion-specific podcasts. Unfortunately I find The Albion Roar almost impossible to listen to (I'm afraid Alan Wares is incredibly annoying - if he could tone things down a bit, leave most of the presenting to Ady, and actually let the guests speak, then that would improve things massively. Having said that, hats off to both Ady and Al for producing the podcast relentlessly for so many years). Together BHA is a bit too repetitive for me. And the Official BHA podcast a bit too stilted....although often the guests are really good, so I forgive the rather "scripted" spiel.

I don’t much like The Rest is Football either TBH. I pick and choose depending on the topic. I occasionally dip into the Ramble to check but nah, too much matey-guffawing for me which is partly why I’m put off Rest is Football - Micah Richards’ constant hysteria.

I find the Albion pods weirdly boring even though they should be the highlight of my week. The Price of Football is on my list, mainly because of the Albion/NSC link TBH but I find the subject matter too dry to get excited about. Good recommendations re City, thanks.

Thanks for the mention of Libero. I had a listen and it's enjoyable. I did crack a wry smile again at the umpteenth mention of Brighton's surprise transfer splurge last summer, although they didn't lay it on as thick as a lot of others.

I don't know if football journalists just don't notice anything other than football, or whether there is a collective missing of this specific point, but nobody seems to ever mention the bigger picture. Tony Bloom said in an interview at the time that our very strong PSR position gave us opportunities that wouldn't necessarily come again. As a chairman, he is known for working some transfer windows ahead. As a gambler, he is known for making the big bet when he sees an advantage. He felt he had that advantage this summer. It wasn't about expectations or betting the farm to get back into Europe, obviously that would be nice, but with Bloom it's always about buying when he thinks there is value. He saw a lot of value this summer and he even explained that in his interview with Naylor: https://onefootball.com/en/news/journalist-tony-bloom-explains-brightons-bold-200m-spending-39995845

I do tend to agree on Brighton, maybe its because I live it more, so I make up my own opinions (and record them), as someone who's already had a 2-3 hour chat in the pub about it, plus recording a podcast, I don't really have much more to think about. Interestingly we get a lot of listeners from abroad, I get more messages from people overseas about the podcast than in the UK, we get a lot of listeners as well in the UK still, but I guess there's not as much media coverage elsewhere than there is here, so most likely a lot of people see it that as their 2-3 hour pub chat.

Thanks for the heads-up about Libero.

When I searched for it I came across several podcasts called Libero.
For anyone looking, this is the one you need:

Toffee TV is the best non-Brighton thing I listen to…down to earth, insightful, and very funny!

Listening to Libero now. Could not find it on apple but did find it on acast.
I'm also listening to it and doubt I'll persevere with it. I tend to listen to Guardian Football Weekly and the Monday Night Club, and this isn't too dissimilar to those although it's not quite as good. It's difficult to appreciate just how good certain presenters are at holding things together and I think Chappers and Rushden are right up there. Not convinced by Rory Smith in this role.
But, then again, unlike the OP I have my limits with football podcasts -- and at some point would rather listen to music or a different-themed podcast.

Quickly Kevin is the best podcast out there. The Steve Barnes books are sensational.

Recommend ‘Under the Cosh’.
If you like hearing stories from retired football players and managers, then you’ll like this series. The Northern humor takes a bit to get used to but after a while you get used to their banter.
Have a listen to Charlie Austin episode – top top bloke. Really honest and amusing interview with him. Believe Charlie Oatway will be on the series very soon.

Agree with this. Brighton Rock is great, especially the match day specials. And I enjoy TogetherBHA as well, as they don't take things too seriously. Both highly recommended.

Another vote for TogetherBHA. Great in depth analysis and discussion.
