I wonder that you may not be old enough to remember some of the Indian umpires in the early 80s 😂
Oh, I'm old enough but I only listened to test match coverage, so I've never seen the worst. The 70/71 Ashes series, with no LBWs given to English bowlers may have been a horror show too. But I think that decisions that give batters not out, even though they look plumb, are not as bad as ones that give them out, particularly when the ball is missing six stumps

I've been freeze framing it, it's a risky move to make, but I can't see how that could be given. Even when you're looking for it, it looks like it's fifth stump at best.

As a pisstake my friend's dad gave him lbw to one like that on his stag do when I was bowling.

After a LOT of discussion he stomped off back to the pavilion only to be called back half way there to carry on with his knock.

Now I'd like the story to be that I got him caught and bowled next ball, but I didn't.

However, when he got me caught and bowled (60+ft in the air, to give people plenty of time to shout abuse) off of his 4 step run up, his dad called no ball.

Now that's comedy umpiring.

What is being discussed is close.

Terrible decision.

The more I see that D'Oliveira decision, the more perplexed I get. I don't think it's just the worst LBW I've seen this year, I think it's the worst LBW decision I've ever seen - it's even worse than Jayasuriya's dismissal of Graham Thorpe, that's how bad it is.
For it to be given out does the ump have to believe it will spin into the stumps, and have seen enough of how much it has turned (after bouncing) to have made the judgment?

As a very amateur umpire I worked on the basis you had to be bloody sure to give it. It's also very easy to say to a bowler one of the following;
- it was going down leg,
- didn't straighten up,
- wasn't doing enough etc)

to defend your decision with confidence 😉

Completely correct. I wish you'd umpired all the time I was batting.

The "etc" legitimately includes additional options:

Pitched outside leg
Hit outside the line
Doing too much
Going over the top
Hit the bat first

I remember giving a player out once who was such an annoying person. It was going down though. I simply said when asked afterwards 'I felt my finger going up and just couldn't stop it'. I ponder that may have been the umpire's problem there. I mean, okay, he's not offering a shot but it still has to be hitting.

I don't think, as an umpire, I've ever met a batsman who WAS lbw.

When I umpired, I never hung around on plumb LBW's. The finger went up straight away. As an umpire you just know. But I had a reputation of raising my finger and then cocking my wrist in the direction of the dressing room. It was known as the 'finger of disgust'. It was given to any batsman who was out to a bad shot or absolutely plumb. My captain complained once. I explained that he was plumb. 'I'm not disputing I was out Ian, I just didn't f***ing expect to be sent off at the same time'

Rape of Hastings, Sussex
First home Division One County Championship game in 10 years today and my gamble of taking today as holiday a few weeks ago has paid off with the weather, so a day in Hove in the sun it is.

Robinson out with a minor foot injury, but the rest of the squad unchanged from Warwickshire: Alsop, Carson, Carter, Clark, Coles, Haines, Hudson-Prentice, Hughes, Hunt, Karvelas, Lamb, Seales, Simpson* (wk)

I see that Robbo's drive to force himself back into the England selectors' reckoning and showing that he's not an injury-prone wreck is going well.

Can't make it there today. Mrs Gwylan is away visiting her sister and the house looks like a horde of Visigoths have used it as a practice run before sacking Romeand I'd better do a bit of clearing up: I aim to be out there on Sunday
