Guardian - Jack Thorne (Adolescence) on incel culture

Jamie is not a simple product of the “manosphere”. He is a product of parents that didn’t see, a school that couldn’t care and a brain that didn’t stop him. Put 3,000 kids in the same situation and they wouldn’t do what he did. Yet spend any time on forums on 4chan or Reddit, spend any time on most social media platforms and you end up, quite quickly, in some dark spaces. Parents can try to regulate this, schools can stop mobile phone access but more needs to be done. There should be government support because the ideas being expressed are dangerous in the wrong hands and young brains aren’t equipped to cope with them.

This is really interesting, from one of the writers of the show.

We've just got the last episode to watch - unfortunately Mrs WS is out with a friend tonight so it will have to wait until tomorrow night. Absolutely superb writing and acting - SG is particularly good but I've always enjoyed SG's acting - great in Line of Duty as well. He's meant to be a really nice guy and a big softie as well - a world away from the characters he portrays.

I think you can tell - from the shows he's written and the issues he tackles - that he is someone who cares about the disaffected and downtrodden, and clearly has his heart in the right place.

Which makes it all the more impressive when he is able to so convincingly play some absolutely horrible characters.

And you've never called a ref names ?? Let's not forget Dunk's dismissal - you'd class him as a nasty person ?
Being an official is a very testing role, and with a lack of folk willing to take up the whistle for a mouthful of abuse every week it's important not to alienate those who do.

I watched episode 1 last night, I'll finish it next week. It was outstanding. The acting was fantastic. I thought Ashley Walters as the arresting officer deserves mention too.
I think he should be a contender for the next Bond - British, right age and rugged looks.

As others have said; Stephen Graham was immense, Id say his best performance in anything. the final episode where he is hanging onto to his sanity and dignity by his fingertips is amazing acting (sorry if thats a spoiler).

I was trying to think which other programmes had left me unable to sleep afterwards from thinking them through ad could only come up with Threads, the last episode of Our friends in the North (would ever have become of Geordie?!), the first series of Time and episode of Neighbours where bouncer had a dream.

See also Boiling Point with SG for the same. I agree - very complicated.

Both are directed by Philip Barantini who once played Billy O'Neill in Dream Team and was Wayne “Skinny” Sisk in Band of Brothers. Really seems to be taking the one take filming method to new heights.

Sounds very good and SG I know is a brilliant character actor but I'm afraid I shy away from anything too harrowing these days. It's a getting old thing. I found the series where he played a prison officer too heartbreaking to watch after the first couple of episodes. I suspect this one would be the same.

Watch it all in one go when it came out.

Had to give my son and daughter a big, long hug afterwards.

I asked my 13 year old son to watch it and he watch it all last night.

Ashley Walters is very good, I have watched 2 episodes this evening and surprised you are the only one to mention him so far on this thread
