The FA have released their report detailing money spent on agent fees by clubs.

We spent £16.5m in the period covered 2nd Feb 2024 - 3rd Feb 2025.

With Premier League clubs spending £409m in total, this makes us below average, although Chelsea (£60.3m) and Man City (£52.1m) inflate that somewhat.

Full report:

This report details each transaction by player (but not the fee attributable to each:

PL plyers earn enough. They should pay there own 'effin' agents, not the clubs. If only a few clubs had the guts to break ranks..............
Yep don’t see why the clubs have to pay the agents , they work for the players mainly, but they do some work for the clubs as well

"I want you to pay me £50k per week, and my agent gets 10% on top".

"No way - we're not paying your agent. You need to do that yourself".

"OK, hang on a moment [consults agent] I want you to pay me £55k per week".

Because the Employment Agencies Act states it is illegal for an agency to charge a candidate for finding them a job. Which presumably everybody who has ever used a recruiter to find them a job agrees with (I don't, but that's another conversation). So why should it be different for one profession?

There is a case for the club having a single, known, point of contact for all dealings with a player. Surely that’s better than the player having unknown agents behind them. And agents do perform a role. You can’t expect all people who are good at kicking footballs being good at negotiating with the club. And we all use agents anyway. When you put your money in a bank or pension you’re relying on others (bankers, or your “agents”) to make sensible decisions on your behalf to get you a good return because they’re better at it than you. They then take a cut of the money.

I'd recommend "Deadline Day" which was a Sky documentary following agents and players as they went through transfers. The agents run the whole show. In some cases they were even doing the negotiating of the potential transfer fee between the clubs to try and get their player moved. A really interesting watch. Shows how these deals aren't simply a club putting in an offer, having it accepted and then going to the player. The fee is almost the very last bit agreed.

The clubs are also using agents themselves, not just the players so that's where the fees will be ramping up.

One player (I think it was Fabian during his move from Napoli to PSG) has about 5 agents with him. Mad.

Does this mean the tea prices on the concourse are likely to remain high for the foreseeable future?

This isn’t an Albion issue though, it’s a wider football issue and not a new one.
