Looks like she could be allowed out of the house very shortly. Expect the pro-democracy movement to get a fresh impetus. Difficult to understand the regimes thinking here. When the people do rebel, it could be bloody. I know little about the background though, just the headlines.

Last 18 months under house arrest.

She'll want to be thinking about getting the lawn cut.

And here's a photo showing the historic moment - Aung San Suu Kyi giving the cameras a 'thumbs up' as her female guardds ensure her release papers are all in order.

Let's all rejoice!

It's a bit of a PR stunt for the regime in the wake of their fake election I guess, for the people of Burma and the international community. I doubt it will lead to any real change in Burma, this has happened before after all.

Of course the election was a complete sham, although it sounds like some seats in the upper house may have gone to democratic party representatives - a bit difficult to tell as the results have not yet been published.

PR stunt, not sure. I doubt they do anything without the approval of China. It may change nothing, but it could also start a tide of chnage which is impossible to stop once it starts. The ruling junta should take heed of what happens to their oppressors one the oppressed are freed.
