Really and I hate to say it it probably says more about the coaching staff than Bart that he needed to point it out

West Hams second goal was on him.

Good ball whipped in, but it was at head height into the 6 yard box. Bart should have been ALL OVER IT to punch it clear. Instead he stayed (uselessly) on his line to allow Soucek to head in. Poor.

Having just caught up with match of the day I didn’t realise how much of a genuine howler the first goal was, again the type of thing that would have Jason Steele bound and gagged and flung in a reverse boat to Calais by his NSC critics.

Second I’m not so sure - was just a great ball by the Bowen and it looks like a midfield runner lost Soucek

Soucek was a yard out when he scored the second. Bart was routed. Take any reasonable offer in the summer and get Stafford or Ramsdale in.

Maybe, but that's off topic. I'm talking about a bit of smart thinking that changed the game, not his actual performance.

OT indeed, however, a pedant cricket coach writes that "long barrier" was removed from the ECB coaching curriculum some years ago...

IMHO it still has its place if you happen to be playing on a shoddy outfield or your hands/ reactions make it a useful insurance policy. We just don't coach it anymore.

Which all kinda links back to Bart. If he knew how to do a long barrier that ball wouldn't have gone through his legs ....

Maybe his mind was elsewhere? (tactics and coaching rather than his keeping)

2-1 down. Bitter end of the match looming. Big Bart spotted a West Ham weakness and frantically signalled to FAB. Repeatedly signalled to his boss to swap the wingers. FAB to his credit, took it on board and instructed Mitoma and Minteh to swap wings. They duly did so. Soon after, Minteh started a move down the left, passed inside to Gomez who flicked the ball to Gruda to head across to Mitoma to head home on the right side of goal. The rest is history. Obviously Baleba went totally off piste with his wonder goal to win it, but it made it's way to Minteh first from the short corner, who fired in a scorcher from the left that their keeper could only parry. It went wide to I think Gruda to lay it back to Baleba. Bart's smart thinking started it all, by switching Minteh to the left and Mitoma towards the right.

I noticed the switch in game. West Ham completely lost their shape over it. All of the markers didn’t know where to go and it killed them. Marvellous switch.

Yep, just making himself as invitingly as tiny as possible, as if a keepers armory is purely reflex saves. No presence or command of his box.

There is no way the second goal is on him. The trajectory, angle and pace of the cross completely takes him out of the game.

No keeper would even attempt to come for that; credit to Bowen the delivery was perfect.

It was a great ball in, but we will have to agree to disagree on Bart's total inaction. I would expect ANY keeper to at least attempt to deal with a ball played into the 6 yard area.

I love threads like this, great spot. I’d seen the switch but didn’t notice the call came from Bart. Fascinating. Thanks for posting!
