FFS I just don't get it. Here in Victoria we have seen a gradual increase 18, 20, 37 cases per day and the government has reintroduced some restrictions. You guys are getting over 1000 a day and are removing restrictions. As to the beach when this happened at Bondi (with probably a 1/3 less density) there was a full blown government response and all the beaches were closed. I guess this is why we have only had 7.5k infections (296 per million) vs Uk at 308k (4500 per million). Most people I talk to are pissed that our Governments did not go harder and, like the Kiwis, eradicate it.

I really don't think the opening of beaches in Florida has much to do with the spike in infections in the state - it's somewhere I follow closely, daily, as we holiday there a lot and have another trip booked for October.

The primary reason for my thinking is that the virus doesn't spread easily outdoors, thankfully. Beyond that Florida has about a zillion miles of beach so, in the main, there is no need for people to be densely packed.

I think the main reason for Florida's spike, and that being seen in many other states currently, is the re-opening of almost every kind of indoor venue combined with some astounding ****wittery by many, many people. The story where a group of 16 friends all went out for their first post-lockdown drinks together and every single one of them got infected that same night perfectly illustrates that.

We spoke to him Sunday via group chat with my wife and her sister who lives in Washington and asked if he wore his mask to church, nope...
Well they went to town on him, basically it turns out god will protect him....

Round my way there is a large scale gathering going on now at Leysdown, which is clearly not locals, again zero social distancing going on... yes it’s outside, yes the risk is reduced, but come on, these people are taking the piss and to condone it is quite frankly wrong!

I've been watching this slow-motion car crash closely over the last few weeks, and it's almost beyond belief. The US, particularly under the current administration and it being an election year, has created a perfect storm for this virus to thrive in.

Coronavirus cases are surging in Texas and hospital admissions are significantly increasing.

“It's pretty dire,” Dr. Peter Hotez, professor and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, told CNN’s Jake Tapper.

“We've got an enormous amount of community transmission. If you look at the curve of the numbers going up, it's following what we call an exponential curve which is it looks initially flat, and then it accelerates very sharply, almost vertically. And that's where we're at right now,” Hotez added.
Hotez said that the state is not seeing increased deaths yet — but they will soon.

"Those deaths will start to mount up, I would say, in a couple of weeks," he said.

Hotez said the projections for Covid-19 cases and deaths in Texas suggest as many as 4,000 cases a day by the Fourth of July weekend just over a week away.

“So, three or four times even this very high acceleration, a very high rate in Houston and similar things are happening now in Dallas, and all the metro areas, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio,” he said. “I can't stress enough how concerned I am.”​

It’s been nearly two weeks since all the demo’s and we’ve seen buggerall increases on rate of infections.

On a call today with Germans, Italians and a Spaniard. General consensus in these countries is that the virus is still there but very much weaker than six weeks ago.
According the German chap the outbreak in the abattoir was detected when a couple of people showed minor symptoms. Germans being German decided to test the rest of the factory and low and behold loads of asymptomatic cases.

I’m taking a pragmatic view. It’s incredibly hot, people were homebound bar grocery shopping and walks/cycling if fitness was in their makeup, for many sloths it isn’t. People in the end have just cracked. If a family or two families travel by car to find a spot at Camber or Bmuff, I don’t think in itself it will be a big covid deal.

Totally agree with you about the mass, packed gatherings eg protests and parties in London, Brighton, Hove Lawns and raves. Madness.

I used to have an asthma related illness as child and still technically have it now. Had to wear a facemask when in Worthing Hospital the other day to drop something off for my mother (not covid related) and I found it really difficult to breath even for the 15 minutes I was inside the hospital. I knew I would have difficulties wearing a face covering before it was announced by the government and this confirmed it for me, but as someone that would find it difficult to, I would hate to get on public transport with so many other people not wearing one. What the don't get is that its for other peoples protection if you pre-symptomatic, not your protection.

That's precisely it. Face coverings I completely endorse the persistent guilt tripping such as that I've experienced on buses for using a neck buff rather than a mask. I've also seen clearly exempt people harangued on buses for not covering up

Flattening the curve didnt mean the curve had any less deaths just over more time. I feel the economy is now the priority and as long as the curve is not as high the government wants as many back to work as possible. As long as the hospitals arent overwhelmed then everything is...ok. We arent going to get a vaccine any time soon either.

Why do people assume that catching this virus means you become immune to it? Are you immune from the flu, the common cold? Sure you get a little bit of residual immunity for a few months but that's it.
