There was a moment last night, end of the first half I think, where our attack came to nothing and a (late) offside was given anyway. Ref signalled the offside, pointed to the assistant with his flag up etc. Martinez had the ball in his hands, rolled it to one of his players who then hoofed it up the pitch - no free kick was taken, the ball was constantly in motion. Is this a rule I didn’t know? Free kick only necessary if the offside happens and the ball is active in a phase of play or something?

Yes.

In the 0-0 against the top team that is Nottingham, some players had individually bad days but tactics and hard work saw us good a good result.

Yesterday was a great performance and if we get the first goal from one of our several good chances, I think the 3 points would be in the bag.
That is very heartening to hear.

Played the advantage I think

Exactly- that was his mistake. He was back as the last man but for some reason completely switched off.

You're assuming that Fab had told him in training that Rashford/Watkins would be full sprinting as they entered our half, and it was his job to beat them, but the way his lack of urgency suggests to me it wasn't something he was ready for.

Whilst I don't think the performance was as bad as some on here would have you believe, my overriding feeling is one of disappointment today.
My view is we were well in the game until the disallowed goal. The goals we conceded were just unforgivable at this level - the warning signs were there in the 1st half with the apparent ease that Villa ran through the middle of our (non-existent) midfield. but to concede after our corner is just amateur.
Personnel was also questionable for me - given that Hinshelwood was on a yellow and survived the penalty shout, I would have brought on Solly or Wieffer to play that side for the 2nd half. As much as I like Adingra, he doesn't like defending and that left Hinsh very exposed - as inconsistent as Minteh is, he does work that side so well.
Gomez looks a decent player but can only play 1 half at the required intensity. I saw a comment that when you look at who Villa can bring on as opposed to our options, that is the difference in squad quality.
3 nil definitely flatters Villa - my sadness is that they didnt really have to work for that, and we gifted it to them. Positives are other results kind of went our way, so we are still well in the mix.
Referee was not great - but that wasnt the reason we lost. Big response needed Saturday now.

Harsh result in many ways, and a setback for sure, but we’re still in with a shot of Euro qualification so need to kick on again.

That wasn’t season defining if we don’t allow it to be.

Why was Villa's third goal allowed to stand ? The ref completely missed McGinn elbowing Wieffer in the head , allowing him to pass the ball forward in the build up. Definitely an instant red card for McGinn. :censored:

Was it the disallowed goal or Dunk going off? They were quite close together. That change left JPvH, Pervis, Mitoma and Welbeck (once on) as the only players who I would call 'a leader' whereas Villa had plenty. Jack H has the potential to be but not yet. Gomez maybe. We looked lost in the last 20 minutes.

I said before the game that I would no way start Ayari because he will get bullied again like he did on Saturday and that is exactly what happened. Baleba obviously needed a rest. I'll say it again for this Saturday though - no way start Ayari, it will be the same outcome. Leicester home or Spurs away, yep I'd start him.

I wouldn't say being excellent players makes them leaders.
In several runs of games this season we've been thoroughly without leadership & calm, focused heads.
Last night was a glaring example.
It's the major flaw in such a young squad
