Last night on the train my son told me what I already know...."I'm a jinz aren't I?"

Games watched this season with him.......Ipswich, Wolves and Saints.

Last season......West Ham, Everton, Burnley

Every SINGLE game we've not won, and been pretty pants in the main. We've got tickets for the Brentford game on the 27th.......any thoughts on what I'm going to bet on the overall outcome being?!!!!

Knew I shouldn’t have watched that game with my Southampton born and bred other half. I’m now in the dog house for god knows how long for insulting her, her family, our friends and everyone else from Southampton apparently.

Why couldn’t we have just won comfortably?!

A frustrating game. Couldn't be bothered commenting on it last night as I was just a bit perplexed by it all.

Main thoughts this morning were

Really missed Baleba. Nothing wrong with o'reilly and ayari but together it's really lightweight. We were back to letting go of midfield in the start of the second half and no one having the seniority, experience or power to get a grip of it.

It made it easy for them to work the angles and keep playing in their wide players.

Ayari is lovely on the ball and it's good to see a good player wanting it so much but really lightweight and with no conviction
Round the box.

For 45 ish minutes Rutter is becoming one of my favourite players. Tends to fade.

Had enough good chances to win by a mile. But then gave up a few scary moments in the second half. We never looked like scoring with our pressure late on though and generally speaking didn't think Saints were that bad.

Welbz looking a bit knackered. Wonder if it's time for Evan to get a start and let Danny freshen up a bit.

Mitoma looking dangerous, really fast and waspish. He's a really top level player (no shìt sherlock etc) .

Pedro was rubbish and spent most of the game complaining and whining. One shoulder barge that he didn't get seemed to put him out of the game for 5 minutes while he followed the red around throwing his arms up in the air.

We looked better with Dunk. More leadership.

Dibling (or 'Dwayne' as my adhd brain kept calling him) looked great for them. Seemed impossible to get off the ball. Seems to be a cross between Grealish and Steve Mcmanaman.

I really do not get people saying we got lucky with the VAR decision. Their boy in the middle, Verbruggen had to keep one eye on him, in which case he is interfering with play, end of.

And if the ref had done his job properly they would not have scored their first anyway as Downes would not have been on the pitch. That said, we fail to beat weaker teams far too often.

Had a reasonable night's sleep, had hoped it would cool me down but nope I'm still hacked off.

Oh well at least today there's all the poxy chores to do and the job of locating the Christmas tree in our utter chaos of an attic to keep my mind busy.

100% this. Verbruggen is trying to decide which one to cover. He’s clearly interfering with play and not sure why it takes VAR 4 minutes to make a decision. Nr 4 should have had a second booking for either the second bad foul that he committed or the totting up process.

Hmmm 1st half apart from the 1st 10 mins when Stains looked dangerous we looked ok. Rutte was unplayable and was unlucky when his shot hit the post. Great assist from Lamptey and good headed finish from Mitoma, pedro and Welbeck thou seemed off the pace.
2nd half Stains defended a little deeper and then hit us on the break. As we know we are pretty useless against the low block and just so easy to get through if teams play long balls over the top. Our front three were non existent and the subs were any better, Adngra and Ferguson hardly touched the ball. In the end we were thankful for the point

Yeah Jones is a very poor ref.
Baulks the big decisions and gets pedantic about the small ones.

Happy to send a coach off, but bottles sending a player off.

No issue with Ayari, or O'Riley.
Just not both.
We needed a ball winner.
Second half , got so frustrated with Saints walking through multiple challenges in midfield.

Spot on in my opinion. Ayari and O’Riley are both number 8snot number 6s. We needed one of them playing alongside Weiffer.
Thankfully Baleba is back for the next game.

Southampton pass the ball nicely and will always be a threat going forward. The problem is their defence and the fact that they give too many chances to the opposition. That was the same last night. We only scored one when there were obviously other golden opportunities to score. We did not take them and thus 'only' drew. It was our attackers who fluffed their lines (for once this season)

I don’t agree with you re the first half performances Southampton. Sometimes the opposition just does some really good football stuff, and in the first half they played 2-3 brilliantly weighted and timed balls behind us, most of which we dealt with very well. And unfortunately, with the way the manager wants to play, that’s always going to be a risk.

The bigger issue was tactical. Their system allowed them to get 3 v 2 down each flank, particularly second half, and particularly when JPVH was moved out to the right, and we didn’t adapt at all. Of course, not having close to our first choice midfield caused issues too.

Their right winger being very good didn’t help, of course. There were 3 or 4 occasions second half where he waltzed past 3 or 4 players at once, including for their disallowed goal.

But let’s not pretend having Veltman out right would’ve made a huge difference last night. Lamptey showed more in the first 45 minutes going forward that JV has shown all season. And that’s with a lack of first team games and the rustiness that comes with it, and with him taking 15 touches to control the ball.

Lamptey’s main role is as a defender. He was hopeless last night, including at least two occasions in the first half when inexplicably he left himself on the wrong side of their player in bog standard play (a ball he should’ve mopped up). Giving rise to dangerous attacks. After HT it got worse.

Yes. For obvious reasons.

In theory, playing an attacking hand against a team with error prone defence and low confidence up front wasn't a bad idea at all, but Saints did a good job of disrupting the flow...the ref was happy to oblige. With that stop/start achieved, and us not getting a return on the attackung hand, it left the moments where we didn't have enough defensive leadership which made Saints moments look better than they were. For his 20 mins of puff we made Dibley the pound shop Grealish beleive he would be signing for Pep next season. We looked complacent with our composure on the posession we had and uncharacteristically poor in team defending. A good reminder on how to set up against teams that try to undo us by stopping the flow.

Actually I think there is. I might be misremembering but I think that keepers are the only ones who, when injured, will have the play stopped for them and the play won’t continue whilst they are not on the pitch. I think it’s because other players can’t cover that position and it’s why lots of keepers feign injuries etc when they want to waste time/give their team a breather.
