Hi all - just after some guidance/potential costs for the following please:

We live in a 1930s property in Patcham, and the stairs are very, very creaky. We're looking to replace the carpet on it following some replastering and decorating work we've had done in the house, but if it is straightforward enough and not a king's ransom, it would be great to have decent, quiet stairs. There's also a couple of annoying squeaky bits on the landing too.

In finest NSC style I know it is a classic "five minute job" but what roughly would we be looking at in terms of time and cost? Would it mean the stairs are replaced, or is it something that is fixed by screws/glue on the existing steps etc., I believe potentially from underneath? There's a cupboard under the stairs, so a reasonable number of the steps are accessible.

Thanks in advance!

If the quotes are too much, may I suggest a cost-effective alternative...

1 day plus a few bits of timber and various glue and fixings should cover it.
So £350.
(Presuming just one set of stairs and there's no serious underlying cause like rot or subsidence.)

West is BEST
Find the creaky bits, fill the gaps with hard drying resin.

Clad this with cork tiles, which is excessive.

Unlikely that you will completely get rid of all noise without completely replacing them. Had our 30s house stairs looked at by a carpenter and some of the noise was back within a few months
