It's obviously the new style. Thought he did well today - not his fault we were constantly exposed.
I don't think the new style of a high defensive line with slow defenders is going to work, especially against pacey attackers as we saw today. I'm fearing Tottenham and Newcastle.

You're not seriously writing off Wieffer after around 180 mins in total? I mean, tell me you're not doing that?
I’m not writing him off, but I predict he’ll be no more impactful than Propper… the Dutch league produces brilliant out and out defenders… midfield and attacking positions are hit and miss at best, and we specialise in over paying for mediocrity in that regard… the evidence is there, we do it time and time again.

Really struggled. Was skinned 3-4 times in the first half alone - Sancho had him for pace. He needed to drop 5-10 yards to give himself a chance, but couldn’t because of the high offside trap.

Was a good runner and willing to get forward - on one occasion picked up the ball wide in the box about 10 yards out and passed it blind to the edge of the six yard box. He had loads of time to take a touch, look up and pick a pass - but I think he was blowing out his arse by then. Came off soon after.

Nothing special so far but again, I reiterate very few players for us played well today.
Disappointing then , seeing as he appeared to be our number one defensive acquisition

I'm really not that keen on having such a specific way of setting up to play (e.g. the very high line).
It means endless analysis videos all over YouTube, and focused oppo coaching to counteract this.
I would like us to be unpredictable in how we set up and play. Maybe that makes coaching much harder, maybe too hard 🤔.

This 100%.

Post match Fab said (some decent direct questions from the interviewer) that if we can't get pressure on the ball higher up the pitch, then we need to drop.
But, I don't think that's possible during open play!! If we don't pressure in midfield then the oppo can fire a ball over the top for their runners...we have a nanosecond to "drop", it's not gonna happen! Need to have dropped before.
This is what Chelsea fans were saying in the pub. One good ball over the top and we're undone. There's no time for players to get back. Hopefully Fab will have learnt a lot from today's game.

I don't really agree. We didnt play a low block in the second half, just slightly more sensible than the first half, and Dunk did well against Jackson. Fortunately, Jackson is fast but shit.
Not sure if we were slightly more sensible 2nd half, or their finishing was slightly more shit?

When we signed Wieffer I said its a player we might be able to keep. One who will be useful for us but go no further. Bit like Veltman.

The role Wieffer is playing in is the most difficult one in the team. I expect him to grow into a good rotational midfielder but its not the new Caicedo or anything. Certainly currently not the level Billy had unfortunately.

There's no way of knowing for sure yet though. Imo in most cases it takes 18 months before you can truly judge players coming from foreign leagues and we're pretty far off that...

They had two or three very good chances to score. We looked threatening coming forward but didn't really create any clear opportunities. On another day, maybe it would have been 7-2.

But we are only 6 games into the new season with most (if not all of our new signings) having never played in the Prem before. They have to be given time. A year ago I thought Baleba looked pretty useless but a year on he looks a really decent addition. Mitoma and Adingra also took time to adjust.

I'm afraid people have just got to be a bit patient, give them time to adapt and adjust. We would have been incredibly lucky if all the new players hit the ground running.
And the one who was most likely to hit the ground running got assaulted. I really think he would have made a difference today.

How did Ferdi play ? Was he worth the wait ?
He was ok at best. Arguably least bad in the back four but doesn't say much.
I'm shocked by how right footed he is though, doesn't even make a simple ten meter pass with his left.
