[Technology] Does anyone use a battery backup for their modem and router?

We have solar panels and a house battery which see us through any power cuts.

But we’ve been having electrical work done in the kitchen which has meant turning that circuit off - the same circuit as our office, where the modem and router are.

A full UPS system would be OTT, but I’m wondering if anyone can recommend a cheap plug-in battery backup that would just power our internet for up to an hour or so? We had a BT one when our broadband was first installed, but the battery died long ago.

At the moment I can’t even turn off the smart light in our living room. 🤣

Yes - I have APC Smart-UPS2200 which gives me about 4 hours cover for the fibre ONT, router, primary network switch and main desktop computer. Being very rural and with overhead power lines, we have frequent short outages... at least it gives me a chance to continue WFH or make other arrangements (fire up the generator etc..)

Thanks, we used to have an APC system for our PCs, but that seems like overkill for just a router and modem.

Having suffered several power cuts in December/January (substation cable went pop and 130 of us were on a generator which failed 3 or 4 times), coupled with a very poor mobile signal, I have thought about making a 12/5v power bank out of 18650 cells pulled from old laptops to use as a backup for the ONT.
I'm also considering one of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/SKE-20000m...0CQR5GMN4/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 .
At just under £100 it looks a reasonable alternative.
The problem I have is that the ONT is in the loft space and the router is in a bedroom (for better coverage) so I'll have to run a cable or have a backup.

One of the many powerbanks that has now sprung up would do the job but not sure how long you would want it to last and if that would make it cost effective. This is the very first one I Googled which isn't too bad price wise but will all depend on the wattage of your modem/router and your maximum length requirements. But you would run it from this and have it trickle charging so you don't need a UPS failover - you are always running from battery.

This is all theory, BTW. Never done it. Just watched a fair few reviews of these powerbanks.

Thanks, that looks like the sort of thing. Will explore those. 👍

Thanks, will see what else is in their range.

The 'uninterruptible' bit is useful for me. Unscheduled outages when WFH are not ideal - and with overhead power lines we quite often get flaky on/off/on/off scenarios which are not good for computer kit.
