Last week I was in a restuarant in Angers, France and got talking to an American couple on a holiday. They kept apologising for being American and that they did their bit to try and stop Trump winning. Now we've had our own shit leaders in the UK but I've never felt the need to apologise for being British.I took a friend of mine to Chicago O'Hare Airport today. She was flying on American Airlines to London Heathrow and then British Airways to Dublin, Ireland.
Her mother made her a pin that I wish I had taken a picture of. It had a Harvard symbol on the pin (although she didn't attend Harvard) and it had the words:
"PROUD AMERICAN. I DIDN'T VOTE FOR HIM."
I was so proud of her.
Posting on his social media account, Trump said there was "no reason for Putin to be shooting missiles into civilian areas", adding: "It makes me think that maybe he [Putin] doesn't want to stop the war, he's just tapping me along, and has to be dealt with differently, through 'Banking' or 'Secondary Sanctions?'"
I was thinking Caligula but he had a good start so a direct comparison is a bit unfair on the Roman.I'm not sure we really need to decide who in history Trump reminds us of.
Only if you had to answer which is more like Hitler and which is more like Stalin would I be able to agree with you on this occasion.
As part of a History A level exam.
But is not a question I would ask.
It is not too dissimilar from "Which division 1 side of the 1970s does the current Albion most resemble: Nottingham Forest or Derby County?
I'm not seeing much evidence that Putin needs to be worshipped by adoring masses while shouting.
And I am not sure that Trump is much of an embodiment of machismo.
Neither seem to be interested in killing all the Jews, either.
I understand that seeking analogy is a way of understanding.
I do it all the time in my job.
Rarely do I hit the target. That's the nature of the beast.
Here we have a couple of one-offs.
I'd like to think that we can find better ways of dealing with them than bombing the shit out of them, or waiting for them to die.
Sadly however.....it seems we have yet to learn what these ways may be.
Stevie Wonder saw that shit coming. So Trump got double crossed by Putin who turned out to be a liar and truly not a peace advocate. How come nobody saw that coming? Only everybody else except Trump who was blinded by love for Putin. The answer being Zelenskyy absolutely saw it coming and was trying to tell Trump this (Putin double crossing the NATO allies & Ukraine) would happen, in the Oval Office, while he was being told by Trump & Vance he should be groveling at Trump's feet because he "didn't hold the cards." Does Zelenskyy hold different cards now?
What an absolute moron Trump is!!!!!
Our rubbish leaders mainly messed up domestically, they didn't do anything to mess up global trade or threaten allies unlike Tango tariff man.Last week I was in a restuarant in Angers, France and got talking to an American couple on a holiday. I don’t think NATO has any mechanism for expelling members. A nation can signal its intention to leave by notifying the United States to trigger a 12 month departure timeline.NATO really should kick the USA out.
Give them 3 months to exit Europe and f*** off back to the States.
Also issue a reminder that we also have nuclear weapons and that any land grab attempt for Canada will mean NATO Article 5 is enacted and Washington will soon be Ashington.
Further to my last post on NATO membership, see the only time Article 5 was invoked.
Nicholas Burns is a very sensible American so little chance of his voice being heard...

Quite, grown-up politics as practised by grown-ups.Thanks, very powerful clip. I hope his audiences listen well in the US.
Yes but in places like Dover, Bumley, Chesterfield and Crawley, if you say "your proud to be English", you can be arrested.Last week I was in a restuarant in Angers, France and got talking to an American couple on a holiday. Or clubs no Trumps?I don’t think NATO has any mechanism for expelling members. A nation can signal its intention to leave by notifying the United States to trigger a 12 month departure timeline.
Which raises the intriguing possibility that at some point Trump announces that the US already left the club by telling itself it was leaving.
In essence, Europe might need to form a new organisation and call it the “No Trumps Club”.

It would certainly provide some needed clarity.NATO really should kick the USA out.

I’ve heard similar, that we’re reliant on the US to supply and maintain the missiles, but not the subs or the warheads. It would certainly provide some needed clarity.
One issue for the UK is that we LEASE our Trident nuclear missiles from the US (but own our submarines IIUC).
I have no idea about the contract or technicalities but assume the US might be able to turn off their use if Trump gets out the wrong side of bed.
Ahh, I didn't know the warheads were 'ours' - needs more research sometimeI’ve heard similar, that we’re reliant on the US to supply and maintain the missiles, but not the subs or the warheads.
This was my source for that, if it helps.Ahh, I didn't know the warheads were 'ours' - needs more research sometime![]()
