When things are made in Italy, France & the UK, then sent to America, don’t they now attract tariffs?

Trump has put tariffs on countries, not goods which is the more usual way of trading.
I'm guessing they generally would? But you'd also assume Boeing will carve out some kind of exemption, else the US aircraft industry, already struggling against Airbus commerically are going to get decimated.

It's a bloody chaotic mess that's for sure.

It’s absolutely obscene but certainly not on the scale of Auschwitz. But one death is too many.

What is the purpose of this place? Where do they go from here or is this some sort of indefinite incarceration?
She also shared this page from Human Rights Watch. It’s f***ing grim reading what’s happening there.

As an aside, this made me wonder what pictures we’d be seeing in this country if the last government had succeeded with its Rwanda plan.

That sounds like you are implying that it is the country and not the end consumer/importer that will be paying the tariff!

It has only been about 3 months of his leadership. Hitler took many years.
Let’s not do these false comparisons again, please.

Fact check: The Nazis established the first concentration camps (including Dachau) in March 1933, following the Reichstag fire. That was two months after Hitler became Chancellor.

There are unmarked graves there apparently. It’s more on the lines of Bergen Belsen. Trump has asked for five, and talked about homegrowns going.
It‘s trafficking.

What concerns me so much is how there is no way to get rid of a tyrant like Trump.

Which is concerning in a western democracy.

He needs to be removed from office. But how?
There are two (legal) ways - impeachment, or the 25th amendment. It would take relatively few of the more sane Republicans to get rid of him Sadly, none is yet showing the required gumption.

It’s certainly along the lines and scale of the fascist dictatorships of the Americas under dictators like Pinochet, Castro, Batista and Arbenz to name a few who took their blueprint for fascism from Franco and Mussolini - geographically much closer to the US and much more recent.

“Tens of thousands of Guatemalans were slaughtered by fascist military forces and far-right death squads in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.”. Thousands of political opponents ‘disappeared’ in Argentina and Peru and other fascist regimes in South America and buried in unmarked graves.

The irony is, is that the US helped prop up some of these fascist regimes:

For example In El Salvador, “U.S. support for the junta continued under presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, Sr. And by the time a ceasefire was declared in 1992 (when the FMLN became a legal political party), thousands of Salvadorans had been killed and/or tortured.”

The global far right never went away it was just sleeping but in the changing global world order and its resurgence, has become very interconnected and transactional with Trump and Musk (and Farage) in the thick of it.

Even more ironic is the criticism Obama received from top far right Republicans for his attempts to normalise relationships with Cuba. Look at them now.

I know this is not news – and I've even said is so many times – but he is so WEIRD.

I saw this clip of him talking about Rory McIlory winning the Masters and he seemed incapable of talking normally about something that is seemingly the most important thing in his life.

That certainly is the case.

A European company selling whatever to US for €100, is still going to be selling product for €100 to the importer as before. Its the importer that will now have to pay the tariff and then either take the loss or much more likely pass on the extra premium to the end consumer.

Thus fuelling inflation.

Good points but Arbenz was the democratically elected leader of Guatemala who aimed to reduce inequality so was deposed by a CIA backed coup.

I can't help but think that's where we were heading up until last July last year, however bad you think of this current lot are

There are mechanisms, but they’ve all been built around the idea of a batshit President being surrounded by rational actors. When the entire deck is stacked with fruitcakes and crazies there’s not a lot of places to go.

I fear the only way we will be rid of Trump is if someone chooses the John Wilkes Booth method of writing their name into history.
