No not quite yet - whatever ‘giving up on the season’ means - failing to get Europe? Win silver? Get a top 8 finish’? Beat teams at the bottom of the table? Nothing new there then in our long history with the exception of 2022/3.

I will continue to go to matches and cheer on my team and willing them to do better.

I’m close to giving up on NSC though - 🙂How many new threads and polls is this now since yesterday caterwauling and bemoaning our poor player performances, recruitment failure, manager, injuries and yet all asking the same leading questions and seeking affirmation of the OP’s POVs with the same posters repeating the same thing across multiple threads.

Not particularly optimistic nor particularly pessimistic- circumspect and tbh slightly bored with it all.
Why even open the thread then? I ignore threads that hold no interest to me or make me roll my eyes

Please don’t give me a five paragraph put down!

And in response to your very reasonable question, yes I am talking about European qualification.

Under normal circumstances i would say we are still in the mix - and the statistics show we are. However, im still waiting for this "reaction" from the Villa defeat - for whatever reason, the players look like they cant be bothered, the repeated mistakes are pub level football and the manager churns out the same rhetoric week after week. Welbeck's quotes seem to suggest that all is not well behind the scenes, and my Albion mojo is not at the highest level.
A good performance / win on Saturday is not only needed but demanded now - but i am not holding my breath

With the obvious exception of Brentford, we've dodged a bullet with the results of those around us this weekend.

A mini-league of 4 now for us. With Cup distractions, the worst GD and their next 2 league games against Arsenal and Forest, I'm excluding Palace.

But our current form doesn't provide us with any confidence of a strong finish.

Points collected in the last 5 Premier League games

8 - Brentford (unbeaten in the last 3 games)
6 - Fulham
5 - Bournemouth (unbeaten in the last 3 games)
2 - Brighton

Obviously all the beat to JPVH. Does he mandatorily miss West Ham, because it was head injury?

No a head injury and a concussion substitution doesn’t automatically mean the player misses the next game. The substitution is a precautionary measure as it’s impossible to diagnose a concussion in that short space of time.

It will now depend on what is found in the full medical assessment and the club will also take into account symptoms may not show up immediately. If there are any signs of one he’ll not be able to play against West Ham and won’t be able to train until he’s symptom free.

I’d still be very surprised if he features against West Ham, and obviously delighted if he is fit enough.

Wolves and Newcastle will win, Newcastle could be a big score. Both have pace to burn.
Perhaps we’ll have some of our players back for Newcastle or perhaps tactically the penny will drop with the manager, that we can’t push up so high.

He has worked Newcastle out twice already.

Nope, but that is probably because I haven’t got the passion for the game and results that I used to have a long time ago, when a bad result would ruin the weekend.
I always want us to win, but it is a bit ‘que sera sera’ these days.

I know you’re an old timer (or I think you are?) so your positivity is refreshing! It’s like I was when I was young before I got ground down by much more disappointment than joy at football matches. It does make the great escapes or unexpected late runs particularly special though. I really hope that you are right
I prefer the term 'seasoned', thank you very much! :D

As frustrated as I am with how things are going, I don’t think I could ever truly “give up” on the season. Do I honestly believe we’ll make Europe? No. But with the way the European spots are being handed out this year, a decent run (which, to be fair, I’m not sure we’re capable of) could just about get us there.

Maybe that is the definition of delusional. But on we go…

Been given a stay of execution. Beat ham next week and all is looking rosy again .

Pray for van hecke.
Very much this. A decent win over Potter and the remaining games will be looked at in a different light.

Bookies make the final order:
8. Fulham
9. Bmuff
10. Us

The Opta ‘supercomputer’ predicted we would finish 10th as far ago as the beginning of January! As much as I had hoped we would buck the odds and break back into the top sixth it’s a sobering reminder that it doesn’t take much for expectations among fans to take a life of their (our!) own. Opta had Fulham finishing in 9th and Bournemouth in 8th.

Quite a few had given up on Europe back in November, which was definitely way too early to write the season off - as was shown to be the case when we picked up a bit of form after Christmas and found ourselves in 6th with 9 to play.

However, optimism in late autumn was realistic with the players we had available and expecting to return. We’re down to the bare bones in defence and have just lost our top scorer for 3 out of 5 remaining fixtures. No chance we’re making the top 8.
