The Truggery, just west of Hurstmonceux on the Hailsham road. Still there, I bought a trug last summer as a present for a gardening friend in France, she absolutely loves itYou could put it all in a Sussex trug. There used to be a place in Hurstmonceux that made and sold them.
Baker St is my favourite shopping street in the whole town. Used to be even better when that mobile phone place was there.Absolutely! First instinct was to mention exactly that tho held off, assuming some kind of expiry date gift wrapping would be involved. Same reason I didn't mention fish'n'chips from Bardsley's![]()
Thanks - it's Yorkshire so far enough but no duty needed thankfullyYour friend will have to pay duty the other end, be careful what you’re letting them in for nice idea as it is!
Great minds think alike eh?Baker St is my favourite shopping street in the whole town. Used to be even better when that mobile phone place was there.
Other emporia include: Jools barbers (ex Coopers); Brogues shoe repairs; Cycle Wand; the clothing repair place; Mitre Tavern....
Thanks, I missed that thread.Great minds think alike eh?
Baker Street: Brighton's Best Kept Secret?
Suddenly struck me today as I was leaving Bangers pie shop with two hearty chicken 'n' mushroom pies AND a serious sausage roll AND change from a fiver, what an absolute quality street is Baker Street. For those poor unfortunates that don't know it, it's just off London Road and behind the Open...www.northstandchat.com
That looks great cheers! I think I’ll go for the trek round shops though - I think I can probably make a nice day out of itWhilst I am reluctant to suggest taking business away from actual shops (they need the revenue after all), it looks like there's a company (based in Eastbourne) that will allow you to complete your mission from the comfort of your home.
Spoils the fun, but you didn't seem too keen on schlepping around to fill a hamper...
It comes with a trug too, so there's that excellent box ticked (though I have found trugs vary hugely in quality, so if you want to guarantee a decent gift, you should source a trug in person and then wander round some of the places mentioned in this thread).
Here's the site anyway: https://www.simplysussexproduce.co.uk/make-your-own
(they do 'off the shelf' gift sets too)
There used to be at least one shop dedicated exclusively to local products. Didn't last long though.
Think you're right with the name, and pretty sure it was near where Riddle & Finns is. They seemed to be dominated by pickles, jams and chutneys IIRC.Yeah, it was in The Lanes IIRC, I think it was called Taste of Sussex. I'm surprised it couldn't make a go of it as there are lots of good things coming from the county - not just beer, wine and cheese.

Long gone I'm afraid, now a Budgens although they do still stock a lot of local stuff. The better half used to work in Steyning and said there is (or at least was) a shop there called Sussex Produce. She hasn't worked there for about 5 years though.
You may be thinking of Sussex And The City, although that must have closed around twenty years ago. Everything it sold was from within 30 miles of Brighton.Yeah, it was in The Lanes IIRC, I think it was called Taste of Sussex.
