[Albion] Joel Veltman signs from Ajax in a 3-year deal

A 3 year deal with an option for another year is in effect a 4 year deal.

My view. There's not a chance we would let him go for free no matter who's in for him. If another club want one of our contracted players, fine, make us an offer.

We're not running a charity here. It costs me £2.80 for a bloody cup of tea. While that remains the case, I hope we're not just going to give assets away for nothing

Agree with you. We don't roll over.
PS: Dan Burn was a regular starter in the first team squad when he was sold. He'd just finished a run of starting 8 games in a row only interuppted by a couple of injuries. And he had started 23 of the PL games the previous season . From about January 2021 until he left he was first choice, first 11 player. Agreed...before then he was a squad player playing rarely.
Agree.
If memory serves me right DB had his run in the side due to injuries and suspensions? I remember saying at the time no-one else would pay that kind of money for someone approaching 1 year on his contract and his 30th birthday in the summer. It was worth it to them as he is a Geordie and has done well but I never thought of him as a first choice CB.

Yeah but this is the only “end of career“ quality player who we have had this option on isn’t it? I wouldn’t blame him in the least for digging his heels in to go to Barca if they want him. Hopefully they don’t and he’ll stay though.
There's no substantial reporting that he's either "digging his heels in" or that "Barca have made an offer" or come to think of it that he's the only "end of career quality player" who have had an option (see also Welbeck ) or that we don't routinely do this with our veteran players (see Gross, Steele, Lallana). So i wouldn't be worrying !

just seems wrong, he goes to Barcelona to improve them and we get nothing, what we paid for him is irrelevant, it should be what he is worth to us and what they are willing to pay, I don't think we would ask for 15 million, but activate the clause and get 5 million for him, so we can put that towards recruitment or wages, we will need a replacement, we are not a charity for one of the richest clubs in the world, feck that.
Getting 5 or even 15 million for JV would be rotten business for our immediate future. What we paid is irrelevant now, that was just down to genius scouting & detailed knowledge of contracts. Another international defender who can cover 3+ positions with ease, younger than Dunky, with Champions League experience would cost many times that

Well the thing is at 31 he doesn't really have a resale value. And because we paid less than a million for him, its not like the club are looking to recoup any of what we paid for him. We're not going to say "you can go, but they have to pay 15 million for you", because nobody would pay that. Activating the extension, is essentially saying we're not letting you go. I hope we don't let him go, but if a club of Barcelona's stature came in for him and he wants to go, I think we'd let him go on free.
Don’t be silly

he gets an unfair rep as a "squad player" . Potter relied on him in that last 12 months, he started nearly every game - aside from a few injury absences - because he was versatile, and yes because he had injuries/suspensions to deal with but also because he kept putting in a string of great performances. (and the odd clanger ). That said we had other options in that position and its hard to argue we've missed him.

Have to agree again, he actually nailed down that LB position incurring endless “Tallest LB in the league” comments every poxy week. He has of course nailed down the LB position at Nukey as well.

1. You forgot to mention the six fingers.
2. My blood pressure has just rocketed off the chart with the word 'Nukey' (up there with tekkers, Maccy Ds, joggers, Tescos)
:)

Haha sorry about the Nukey. I have Newcastle fans in the family so it slipped out. Won’t happen again!

I am not worrying, just suggesting that if he wants out, I can’t imagine we’d stand in his way, that’s all

ha . Not sure there's anything to suggest he "wants out" or even if he did - we wouldn't be trying to keep him. He's a key member of the squad.

What we paid for him is not relevant, it's what he's worth now.

I’m not suggesting that Veltman wouldn’t act professionally but if there really is an offer to play for Barca on the table and we say he can’t go I would imagine he would be pretty pissed off. Not sure we would want a disgruntled member of staff around bringing a mood of gloom to the place. Can’t see the point personally.

Absolutely this. Caicedo has been toilet since January and destroyed our season. Oh no, wait...

We let loyal servants go quite easily if they want to. For example letting Duffy go to Fulham with 1 year left on his deal etc.

A 30+ year old player different to a youngster

Ha ha, point taken. I wasn’t suggesting he would sulk just that it doesn’t seem worthwhile to treat him like that. Make him an offer that reflects our valuation of him and see what happens. Barca haven’t got a pot to piss in so that would blow them out of the water.

They have said that but, at times, they don't keep to that (eg Stephens, Caicedo). I think they say something more than 'we won't stand in a player's way', it's usually caveated with something along the lines of 'provided the circumstances are right for the club'.
Barber has said this many times in interviews, the full line is something like the deal is good for the player, the club and the timing is right.
