Barrister Richard Hermer KC has been appointed attorney general.

He will also receive a life peerage to allow him to sit in the House of Lords and attend cabinet.

??? 410 odd MPs and Starmer is appointing Lords for ministers? is this lack of faith in the intake, or novel approach of using experienced people?

Still no solution? Haven't heard.

Could Labour stop the boats?

Labour has no proposal to remove migrants arriving by unauthorised routes to a “safe third country” - so does Keir Starmer’s plan to deal with “illegal” migration stack up?

Let us imagine a small boat of asylum seeking migrants arrives on the Kent coast next month. Aboard are men, women and children from the countries which typically make up arrivals coming across the channel.

Half of the passengers have come from countries so unstable there is no chance they can be returned: Afghanistan, Iran, Eritrea, Syria, Iraq and Sudan. Almost all come from states with which the UK has no agreement to return those not granted asylum.

Answers on a fag packet.
Perhaps you should vent your frustration at the Tories who‘ve had at least 6 years to fix, rather than new PM who is mostly still trying to work out how the oven works in number 10!
in all honesty anything written on a fag packet would be better than the Tories.

The second.

With these two it looks like best people for the job.

Wasn't his brother a Tory MP ?

Exactly.

I thought we voted that we’d had enough of experts in 2016? Then Boris proved all the scientists wrong during Covid (he almost died but those who seen him play tennis knew he’d pull through).

Why on earth are these people being put into the Lords?

Should be people like Charlotte Owen who have actually helped in government by making Boris tea and doing his photocopying.

These look like two quite niche roles, so probably a bit of both, which doesn't seem unreasonable.

These Lords appointments, this means they can obviously sit in House of Lords and as above attend cabinet but they won't have any access to HoC ? and won't be eligible to vote at all ?. Has this happened much in previous regimes, not saying it's a bad thing at all, especially the likes of Vallance but neutrality questions I guess can/will be raised.

I don't like this whole "lets appoint people with experience in the specific field to the head of govt".

It's much more fun when it's as before
"Good evening Janet"
"Hello Prime minister"
"Janet, you know what a huge fan I am of your work in the banking sector and your extensive work as a lecturer on economic analysis before becoming an MP. And it is that expertise that I want to use in my cabinet"
"Oh. This is such an honour, never did I dream of being The Chancell"
"Congratulations Janet. You are the new foreign secretary"

100% this. If you’ve been to a good English school such as Eton then you should have the confidence to slot into any ministerial position.

Remember, the country voted against experts in 2016 and whilst all their predictions about Brexit have come to fruition, this country clearly affirmed and opinion was more important than a fact. Having a scientist as a minister splurging unwanted facts about in cabinet meetings when the public are hungry for unqualified opinions can only lead to one thing. More lockdowns.

It’ll be interesting to see how quickly this one gets resolved, and how
It's great if it gets resolved, but if they agree on the same sort of deal that was offered before, it's pretty scummy behaviour by the BMA

First test of pre election promises of not folding to the unions as well.

Streeting comes across well, he seems to get the NHS can't be fixed by throwing more money at it alone

He told us he'd be dealing with that on "Day One".

It's one broken promise after another...:ROFLMAO:
