Practices not uncommon up and down the land, I imagine - people in positions of power take advantage of their power to benefit themselves and friends, often with funny hand-shakes. Still, well done Merseyside police for rooting out some malpractice and presenting a case - but surely with gun crime, knife crime and seriously violent drug wars rife, they've got better things to spend their time on.

On a complete separate note, has Derek Hatton been drinking from the fountain of youth? That man is not in a million years 77, he looks a million dollars.

Sorry this rubbish, if you had read Private Eye you will know about Hatton's criminality, far too late to have nicked him IMO

Someone else quoted private eye as a more or less factual/truthful source on a different thread. I read it from time to time and enjoy its view on the world. I’m genuinely interested as to why you believe it has the factual status you imply

Very common. I was made aware of the procurement head of a large uni in SE England, who over many years always ended up awarding construction and facilities contracts to the same largish construction company. Eventually it was found to be due to corruption, he'd received £100k's in backhanders.
