Yes it is. GKs are rarely substituted except for injury or red cards. So one of the mist likely times a sub keeper is called upon is when the GK has been sent off and conceded a pen. So a sub keeper who's a bit of a pen specialist is sometimes quite useful, and it looks as if Potter might have got a point, eh?

I believe in the new rules, a keeper would only be sent off if the offence was outside the box and not in the box.

So, you put your 3rd choice (or maybe 4th) keeper on the bench for the Premier League, on the off chance that he has to come on and he will have to face a penalty? You leave your second choice keeper, who is a better all round keeper in the stands because he has a worse penalty record (not worrying about the rest of the game that the sub keeper will need to play)
. Yep, you've got it.

What a load of tosh!
That's your opinion, fine.

Name me another club in the league that drops their Number 1 and he doesn’t go on the bench?
I can't answer that, unfortunately, as I don't know the pecking order if every club's GKs. Neither, I suspect, do you.

Anyway, maybe Ryan's our number three now, which might be why for the last few matches, including tonight, we've had our no.1 and no.2 GKs in the squad. Anyway, I stand by my point. I think CH had a similar idea with Tim Krul.

It's certainly an idea in cup games where shoot-outs are likely given our propensity for draws, but I kinda agree carrying it over into league games is questionable.

Trevor Sinclair reacts (on TalkSport) to news that Arsenal might be interested in signing Maty Ryan (yep, news to me too):

“Well, he’s got plenty of experience,” said Sinclair. “But the fact that he’s not in the starting line-up, it tells you everything you need to know.

“If he’s not good enough for Brighton’s first-team. Why should he be good enough as number two for Arsenal?

“Emi Martinez, it was a necessity because he had deserved his chance to play first-team football. He was desperate to play first-team football and he was given that option by Aston Villa.

“But bringing in Maty Ryan. The fact that he lost his position in the Brighton starting XI means to me that he's probably a little bit short.”

FINALLY a well-informed pundit! :lolol:

Having said that, he contradicts his own logic about Martinez - I'm sure Ryan is desperate to play 1st team football too!

That’s precisely the kind of banal platitude punditry I can’t stand. So Trev said all that, when basically he hasn’t got any actual observations on the player in question. Probably hardly seen him play.

“Oh, well, if he cant get in Brighton’s team whys he good enough for Arsenal”

I mean, the premise isn’t wrong, but he clearly knows nothing about him as a keeper. His strengths or weaknesses, or why even, he’s been left out the team. And he’s paid money for this opinion. Amazing insight.

It's worse than that though isn't it - he's saying if he's not good enough to be Brighton's no 1, he's not good enough to warm Arsenal's bench...

However, he knows enough to nail the biggest reason (pun intended) some Albion fans don't rate him, albeit accidentally

Hmmm slightly uncomfortable with the club putting ‘goalkeeper wallpaper’ on social media with Matt Ryan missing.

I'm feeling quite sad for Maty to be honest. with GP obviously not rating him, l think whatever he does, however hard he works to get back into the side, he is guaranteed to fail.

Sanchez seems to be very much the established number one now, and with Steele's heroics at Newport bringing him to the fore, and Christian Walton at the club too, l think it would be best for everyone that Ryan moves on PDQ. Less than a fortnight left of the January window though, and l don't know if there has been any interest in him.

Whatever his alleged failings may be, he is obviously much better than a fourth choice goalkeeper at the Albion.

Not bothered about no Walton though I’m guessing ?

No not really. Maty Ryan has done far more for this club than Christian Walton has, or will.

We don't know what has happened behind the scenes but even given that Ryan has had a poor season, he is at least our 2nd best keeper. I would say that on form he is still our best.

Something might have happened that means he won't play for us again but if that's not true he should at least be on the bench. Being able to save a penalty is not a mark of how good your keeping is and Steele is not good enough to be number 2.

Alleged? Come on, are you really saying that you can’t see a difference in the quality of keeping and the confidence of the defenders over the last few league games?

Sanchez is also a rookie, he will make mistakes (which in fairness Maty very seldom made) but to my eyes he has massive potential and has possibly been thrown in sooner than we’d like. But as they say if you’re good enough it doesn’t matter how young or inexperienced you are. Seems to have massive potential to me, but there will be bumps along the way.

Waltons off to Luton isn't he ?

Sell Ryan if he's that far off first team or thrown his toys so far out the pram its irreversible and get the lad from Newport quick before his stock rises any further.

Have we ever had a glove wearing prolific striker?

Quite. Potter (with Roberts for sure) has decided Sanchez is the better keeper overall and that much has been evident in his games so far. More imposing, more saves, better at claiming crosses. May not be better in all aspects yet - potential ricks and distribution perhaps - but OVERALL deemed better so worthy of the calculated risk Potter is taking. Could pay huge dividends. Maty is a full international and will want to be playing, so the no 2 position will be of no use or interest to him. All makes sense.

No slight on Maty by the way, a fantastic professional, brilliant representative of the club and a very solid keeper - we’ve just upgraded, that’s all, same as we would with any other position if we could.

Hey l'm not saying that l am a paid up member of the Maty Ryan Fan Club at all, merely pointing out that he is far better than fourth choice goalkeeper, and that it's best, in everyone's interests, that he moves on during this transfer window. No more than that.

Nathan Jones has effectively ruled this out. He said he would like to work with Walton in the future, but is more than happy with his first choice keeper right now.

absolutely all of this!

Specifically the highlighted piece.
No way, this decision was made without a significant input from BR.

Still in Brighton
Something major must have happened, it's seems like one of those made-to-train-with-the-kids fall from grace(s). Sad really. Hope the situation is resolved quickly. Did always love the way he seemed to join in and foster good team spirit with is goal celebrations. Hope the club haven't treated him badly.
