One simple question: WHY?

Since you ask, because it's a convenient way to keep my long hair out of my face. I don't think a ponytail looks particularly good but it's practical.

I have tried bunches and a topknot instead but only to laugh at my own ridiculousness in the mirror. There are worse things than a ponytail.

Many of your examples are of people playing sport, I've got reasonably long hair and when I box or play football I put my hair up into a pony tail. Going out is another matter though, unless I want to windup my girlfriend, she 'f'ing hates it lol

Ponytails are fine, except, as someone else said, on men with thinning hair. What I find abhorrent is men who have a full head of hair but shave it off. Why? As far as I'm concerned, it does nothing to enhance their appearance, in fact, quite the opposite. Fair enough, I suppose, for men who are going bald anyway.
I get the impression that some men think it looks macho to have a shaved head but that it's effeminate to have long hair. Far from it!

Quite agree. I actually think pony tails on men are very masculine. Shaved heads, on the other hand, are just thuggish.

I don't mind pony tails on men if its put in one occasionally for convenience (had to do it myself on the odd occasion when mine was long)

I don't think I would want to tell him he was a prat for having a pony-tail. And anyway, I think it is more in the Emmanuel Petit class of pony-tail rather than an old bloke with thinning hair.....
