[Albion] Some people seem to think we could do with NOT qualifying for Europe this year.

So in theory you'd rather finish 6th two years in a row but not play in europe than say 6th followed by 8th and winning the europa league?

Even though the latter scenario gives us a trophy, more wins over the season and a chance to play the Milans, Juventus, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern, PSG etc the season after?

Have I understood your position correctly? Or have I got it completely wrong?

Pretty much. Both because your scenario doesn’t mention the more than likely fall off in our Premier League position (if you’re going to assume we’ll win the European Conference League if we qualify why rule out the possibility we’d finish 5th in the EPL if we don’t?) and because I object to the formation of this third tier European competition. Why didn’t UEFFA bring back the European Cup Winners’ Cup instead?

what do football fans want ? every other league (except the prem) fans have a realistic belief that they can win the comp

so the, winable "competitons" we are in each season listed by least to most chance of winng :

1 Prem title - 5% chance (1 in 20)
2 4th place the champ league cup (aka Arsenal cup) 20% (4 from 20)
=3 FA cup - 25% chance
=3 league cup - 25% chance
5 Europa league - 30% chance
6 Euro confernce league - 35% chance
7 Not religated 60% chance
where the f*** are you getting your percentages from?

I do find people odd sometimes. I would love it if we had a go at the Conference League. And a chance to get a cheap ticket against a European team I've never even heard of? Yes please. Too much presumption from fans, take any opportunity you can in football don't pass it up because you're not quite ready. Ridiculous.

Absurd position not to want to qualify for Europe. Those who don't want that may well get their wish primarily down to injuries, again. Will be harder next season. United and Spurs can only get better as will Everton in their new stadium.
It'll be a hell of a lot tougher next season. Imagine 2 of the 3 coming up will struggle but wouldn't be surprised if Leeds make a reasonable return. As you say United spurs and Everton will improve. We'll do well to keep ourselves around mid table.

Probably largely the same set of oddballs who would prefer us to be playing in the Championship because it's more competitive or some old shit

I think they're mad/wrong.

Total madness. I'd genuinely prefer the conference thingy and a few crazy aways to Bulgaria and Malta.

This cheepo salt pot I lifted from some (excuse the pun) greasy spoon near my hotel in the early hours of the morning is a constant reminder of how great Europe was every time I’m cooking dinner and reaching for a condiment. Little things an all that.

It doesn't help that our most likely entry in to Europe would be something called a Conference League. Smacks of our own pyramid from the Premier League down to the Vauxhall Conference where the Conference League is just a small, lowly component. Doesn't fire the imagination...

It hasn’t been the Vauxhall Conference since 1998, or the Conference League at all since 2015. There is pretty much a whole generation of fan coming through who will associate the word conference with the third tier of UEFA competition.

No you're not being whooshed.

The squad you are complaining about being not good enough, have got us to 10th - with the same number of points we achieved in 5 more games last season. We currently have More points than Potter achieved in his first 2 seasons and 3 shy of his best points tally, with a squad that included, Bissouma, MacAllister, Cucurella, Caicedo, Mwepu & Trossard.

With the number of injuries we currently have and our main forward out for 3 matches, being able to field a starting 11 of experienced players in their preferred positions is a very respectable place to be in.

Whether the players are showing the mentality to achieve what they are capable of, is open to debate.
But there is no doubting that the depth of squad we currently has SHOULD be good enough to cope with the remaining fixtures.
I wouldn’t bench mark Potter as we are witnessing one of most overrated managers in the league. People assume in his last season had he stayed European glory was nailed on.
The biggest difference between Potter & DeZerbi was belief he tried to break the small club mentality which by the way he obviously failed to do reading just about every football related thread on here.

That small club attitude suits just about everyone when we can’t beat the absolute dross at home excuse after excuse for our bird brained hopless manager who sacrifices our best midfielder and then gets done in midfield by Leicester priceless.
We then travel to Brentford who love to play on the break and he gifts wraps it again. The fools again defend him with every excuse under the sun as we are only Brighton.
RDZ tried and failed to change the mentality now we could do without Europe despite TB building a squad more than capable of qualifying for it again priceless.

The manager has gone back to his bullshit system a quick player that’s meant to cover slow centre backs. It’s the PL not bund league 2. Two clubs basically play the same defensive line Spurs and us, it doesn’t and will never work.

I don’t even know why people are still mentioning a chance of Europe if you watched Webecks post Brentford that’s not a squad thats “ together “.
We will be lucky if we win another game.

Take what you can when it’s available, I say. Everton and Wolves look like they will be top half standard next season. Add United & Spurs back into the mix. Plus Liverpool, Arsenal, City, Villa, Newcastle, Chelsea, Forest. That’s 11 very competitive clubs before you even get to Bournemouth, Fulham, Palace, West Ham. It doesn’t take much of a drop off to finish 16th.

Erm…. I hate to break this to you but apparently UEFA have agreed a deal with this lot to sponsor it next season 😳

Obviously time will tell but last spring Wolves’ form had their fans dreaming of Europe only for the club to find itself struggling to stay up again this season. Pereira is a good manager but with Cunha certain to leave I have my doubts as to their prospects.

I can't fathom your first point. It genuinely doesn't make sense to my way of thinking. Do you not want the club to win trophies? Whats the point of finishing say fourth every season if you have nothing to show for it?

I wasn't assuming anything, it was a hypothetical. I'll offer you another one:

Would you rather finish 4th 10 times in a row but never win a trophy/play in Europe or finish 5th-7th five times followed by a drop off to 10-13 each of the following seasons but win a trophy/reach a final in each of the down years?
Pretty much. I don't disagree with your second point. There was nothing wrong with the old European formats from a sporting perspective.

Your first one though I just cant comprehend. What's so special about finishing fourth or fifth on repeat if there's no reward for it? Are you against us winning trophies too(as in to win them they're extra games) or just competing in Europe? What if we won a trophy but it meant that we finished lower in the league that season?
