Very very harsh. He was a good player when we were in the Championship. Scores goals too.

He was certainly one of our best players just before he got injured. The scoring goals bit is an urban myth. He has scored less than 10 in his whole career, I think. Certainly no more than 5 or so for us.

I didn't say how many.

we actually had this conversation in the pub last wed and all of us had different teams but all of us included Paul reid in our teams

We did, and my starting XI is barmy enough that the centre-half pairing is very young and inexperienced, the centre midfield pairing has never been tried, and the centre forward pairing isn't firing on all cylinders yet. Apart from that, it's a winner. So here goes...

Kuipers

Whing
Lynch
Elphick
Richards

Cox
O'Callaghan
Hinshelwood
Reid

Revell
Forster

Sort of obvious really. There are a few positions where it's close though, and that is one of the biggest difference between this season and last. We have a squad, we have the ability to change things, go for different styles and types of player. The bench always looks strong. It's good.

The ones that don't pick themselves are:
Central defence: Those two are both fantastic young players with big futures, but there is possibly an argument for experience in there. And that is Butters obviously. And there's also Hinsh too, but despite this being based on the idea of everyone being fit, it's getting harder and harder to see him coming back, especially to be the player he was promising to be before his knees gave way.
Right wing: I think Paul Reid is a good player, very sound technically, a good passer who can split a defence and a good crosser. Not a winger but neither is he a central midfielder based on what I've seen. Martot at times looks a good player but can be anonymous. And then there's Robinson, whose best position I still can't work out. He can fade in and out of games and doesn't always seem to know the right time to put the ball over - but he can be absolutely electric. I'm a fan of him as a player but he's had a lot of opportunities up front and has sadly not really looked like being the player we hoped he would. He's got a lot of talent but seems to get bullied, doesn't always get in games enough and has missed a few chances he should be scoring.
Up front: Forster in current form is a no brainer, long may it continue. His partner is less obvious, Savage is the one at the moment but he's far from perfect, but then neither are Revell, Robinson, or Elder. They all have different strengths and weaknesses so it's difficult to argue one is better than the other (except maybe in the case of Elder :(), but Savage seems the most likely goalscorer at the moment.

Why isn't he good enough in the middle? If George went back to Ipswich, and it was a choice of Reid or Fraser, I know who I'd pick, and it would be Reid every time. He's never really been given a chance there for us in my opinion.
just never impreed me whe i havesee him playing there he is a decent wide midfield player but to me he hasn't got nough to play in the centre

fraser has had 3 decent games in the middle leed, cheltenham(away) and hartlepool im not saying he's the answer either but i would be more inclinded to playhim there than the reidy

Realistically, I think you have it spot on, though Hinsh at his best is a match of either of the CBs.

If however we are picking, the 11 based on every player at their absolute best, then it changes. Savage at his rare best would start, and when he's on fire [see Huddersfield away last year, see Saturday] Jake is our BEST player. The rest of the time, he isn't. :jester:

Hinshelwood in central midfield?

Assuming the defensive midfield role - why not? Assuming O'Callaghan plays the advanced role, would you rather have Hammond, El-Abd, Reid or Hinshelwood in the defensive midfield role?

Although still young, I rate Lynch and Elphick as a decent centre-half pairing. So where do you put Hinshelwood? Full-back? That's a waste of his talent. No, plonk him in midfield in front of the defence where he can be most effective.

However, as I said, it is completely untried, so I can't obviously point to any evidence. I just feel it would work.

Why is playing a good player at full-back, a waste of his talents? Proper specialist full-backs make as much difference to the shape and success of a team as any other position.

*Hish has never looked very good at RB anyway, so irrelevent to this discussion anyway!

Sort of. But then, you've answered the question yourself. It's vital for any team to have a decent 'spine'. Playing, Lynch or Hinshelwood, for instance, out wide lessens their impact on the game, especially considering defensive duties. And when you consider what effect either of these two can have on a game (compared to say, Whing or Richards), I would rather they played in central positions.

Attacking duties are a slightly different argument.
