As a veggie weirdo freak, should I be able to eat taramasalata?

I'm not a vegan and I eat hen eggs.

The primary ingredient of taramaslata is, I understand, roe which is just fish eggs.

Yet, instinctively, I feel that it is something I shouldn't eat.

I have no great urge to eat it, you understand, I am just curious. All that said, I did love cod roe back in my carnivorous days.

the big diffrence between roe / fish eggs and hens eggs, is of course that the fish are killed in the harvesting of the eggs.

So no, you may not eat it, if you are truly a 'vegetarian'.

Tara is Roe and Lemon Juice, and something else, but can't remember.

In theory if you eat fish, which I know a lot of veggies do, then Tara is fine. Don't eat it all though, leave some for us manly meat eaters. Uggg!

If you eat fish it is fine, but the difference between your hens eggs and your fish eggs, is you have to kill the fish to get at them.

Chicken egg retrieval is usually non fatal to the bird.

BTW, Taramasalata gives me the raging HORN!

I don't eat fish, no.

There's no definition of being a veggie, that I'm aware of, that includes eating fish. Although I am well aware of those that are veggie 'but eat fish'. Just like those veggies that 'only eat chicken'...

I get confused by who eats what and calls themselves what - thats why I asked....so I guess if you don't eat fishies then you shouldn't eat the product of fishies - if you get my drift?

INGREDIENTS (serves 6 )

150 g smoked cod roe
250 ml olive oil
1 garlic clove
30 ml lemon juice
5 g chopped parsley
10 g finely chopped onion (or more to taste)
freshly milled black pepper

PROCEDURE

(1) Cover cod roes for a few minutes in boiling water to loosen skins, then peel them.
(2) Crush garlic and rub around a mixing basin (bowl). Discard garlic.
(3) Dice roe, add 30 ml oil, and stand for 15 minutes to soften.
(4) Pass roe through sieve into garlic-rubbed basin and beat until smooth.
(5) Add half the lemon juice, gradually beat in the rest of the oil, adding the remainder of the lemon juice at the half-way stage.
(6) Stir in the chopped onion, parsley and blackpepper to taste.
(7) Chill and serve.

NOTES

This recipe can be made with any kind of fish roe. Greek sometimes add 100 g of cooked potatoes. The only tricky bit comes in adding the oil: you should do it a little at a time like preparing mayonnaise, and be careful not to let the oil separate. If it does begin to separate, add another dash of lemon juice.

Taramosalata will keep for about a week under refrigeration.

There's different reasons for being veggie though aren't there? If you're a veggie because you don't like the thought of animals suffering just so you can have some dinner then obviously you don't eat fish.

If you're just doing it because it's 'healthy' then I guess you can eat fish, and maybe chicken as well - but then you're hardly qualified to call yourself a 'vegetarian'.
