Thought it would be good to have a thread to keep track of this, but also if one of you EGGHEADS could please explain to a THICKET like me what needs to happen from this point on to mean that finishing 8th might actually = BHA visiting the likes of Paphos, Celje and Bialystok.

Many thankings.

Remaining fixtures;

Bournemouth - Palace A, Man Utd H, Arsenal A, Villa H, Man City A, Leicester H - quite a tricky set I'd argue
Fulham - Chelsea H, Soton A, Villa A, Everton H, Brentford A, Man City H
Brighton - Brentford A, West Ham H, Newcastle H, Wolves A, Liverpool H, Spurs A
Brentford - Brighton H, Forest A, Man Utd H, Ipswich A, Fulham H, Wolves A
Palace - Newcastle A, Bournemouth H, Arsenal A, Forest H, Spurs A, Wolves H, Liverpool A

Just you watch Newcastle roll over like utter twunts tonight.
I'll turn over to hopefully watch Arsenal get given a proper scare at the very least.

Atmosphere in the Villa game was phenomenal last night.

Twinge of sadness turning over to the Dortmund Barca game right as they're waxing lyrical about how clever a player Pascal Gross is (in a Champions League Quarter Final). You know, the fella I thought was past it for us about 3 times over the last 2-3 years.

Goal difference is not on our side. If we can have Veltman and Mitoma (and able to play Van Hecke and Dunk consistently) for most of the remaining games, we have a chance.

Top 5 = Champions League
6th = Europa League
FA cup winners= Europa League
League cup winners = Conference League.

If the League Cup winners finish in a position that will qualify them for a better European competition they take that comp, and the positions to qualify add one League position.

eg Newcastle finish top 5, they go into Champions League not conference and Conference League goes to 7th place.

If FA Cup winners now finish in Top 7, Europa goes to 6th and 7th, and Conference to 8th

Assuming things play out as expected towards the top of the table, it's only Palace winning the FA Cup that could deny 8th spot qualifying for the Conference League.

I wish you hadn’t told me that, nailed on that Palace get into Europe and at the same time keep us out of Europe :down:

Who’d have thunk that after the start to the season both clubs had.

I for one certainly don't want us to get into Europe next season as we have already seen the devastation it causes in the League with injuries and fixture pile ups (don't like Thursday & Sunday games as well) . It will be doubly worse with the bunch of injury prone players we have now. So I am in a quandary for the remainder of the season - I want us to win every game but stay out of Europe ! :shrug:

I get that but if we're not aiming to be in Europe and we're not likely to win any domestic competitions any time soon what is the point of it all? What distinguishes us from Palace with their "we're just happy to be here, and to finish 12th every season" ethos?

I flicked between the two games last night and from what I saw of Gross, he was the best player on the pitch. He really was peak Albion Gross.

Finishing 8th, and getting a place in the Europa Conference League, is the best chance any us have of seeing the Albion win a trophy*

*except possibly winning the Championship, but let's not think about that right now.

And whilst a European adventure does create some workload issues for the squad, the pay-off is some unforgettable trips for the fans, some brilliant nights at the Amex. It also might help persuade one or two players to stay with us, who otherwise might consider moving on.

I do think too, that the workload / fixture pile up thing would be less of an issue if it were the Conference League rather than the Europa League. SOME of the opposition would be such that we could rotate heavily.
