[Albion] The two pens

Firstly, if I talk about the team I'll spontaneously combust and secondly, and to be absolutely clear, the ref had absolutely no part in us drawing, but how in the name of sanity did the ref need VAR to give the pens? Both pretty clear in real time and especially so for the second one - right in front of the assistant too. Imagine needing Attwell to rescue you from two awful decisions. Are refs now using VAR as a safety net rather than making clear decisions on the pitch?

Honestly, I didn’t think either were that clear.

The first one, his arm does move towards the ball so I do think it’s probably about right, but I didn’t think that in real time and nor did anyone around me from WSU. But his arm was relatively close to his side from the replay we saw in the stadium… probably a 70/30 in favour of it being a pen.

As for the second, I thought it was incredibly soft. I thought MOR had a decent game, but why he felt the need to take a touch rather than shooting first time is beyond me. His touch wasn’t good enough, and he was going down before the contact really happened following his poor touch. As I say, I thought it was soft.

I’ve not seen the second one back but the verdict from the BBC text commentary was it was very soft.

Suggested a small pull on the shirt but O’Riley threw himself down, which surprised me as live it looked like O’Riley had been mugged.

However before the penalty he was pulled back when through against the keeper, he stayed on his feet and nothing was given. Based on that, I can’t blame him for milking it the second time.

First one was clear. Second was a bit soft but then it’s daft to tug a shirt like that in the box.

several minutes of play after first penalty not awarded before var kicked in. If Leicester or us had scored, would the goals have stood ??

Because it just isn't as easy as it seems, which is always the answer when these "how did he miss the obvious?"-questions pop up after every game in every league on the planet.

He certainly wanted it and I was fearing he'd get punished for unnaturally falling over. But the Leicester defender had a firm grip of that shirt, too much to be ignored.

I've yet to see this happen but would be interesting to see that situation one day.

Them, 100% not. Not sure about us, unless they can claim we have already ‘advantaged’ from lack of VAR up until that point

I think the issue is that the shirt is pulled and the defender keeps hold of it as he spins MOR round. That's why it was given when some arent

The first time when he went through and was pulled back - it just slowed him down a bit, and he was able to maintain his forward momentum and get a shot off. The one he got the penalty for was different as the defender pulled him sideways away from the ball from being almost stationary making him off-balance - and then proceeded to keep hold of his shirt with one hand, and helped him down with the other.

Having now had the chance to watch them back after getting home I'm more convinced than ever that, between them, the onfield officials HAVE to see both pens on the pitch - both as clear as day. Abysmal decisions even if I thought he had a generally good game.
