If you look at the FA Rules, then I can't see why Coady wasn't sent off for his deliberate handball that stopped an obvious goalscoring opportunity?

Which bit of this rule didn't the ref or the VAR team understand?...............
It wasn’t DOGSO in the referees opinion. It also wasn’t a DOGSO in the minds of the EPL feed commentators as they made the point Coday didn’t need to handball as there was a covering defender.

It's nothing to do with not understanding the rules. The reason he wasn't sent off is because the referee decided that the handball offence was not a deliberate attempt to play the ball with his hand, it was an attempt to block the ball legally.
This isn’t true. The referee decided it was deliberate

Just far enough away from LDC
The only possible explanation for NOT awarding a red, is if they felt that the defender closer to the goal (behind Coady) was going to block the shot.
And that's why the ref took so long at the screen. The penalty decision was im told quite quick but the sending off or not took way longer

If that's the case (how do we know?) then it should have been red, you're correct. It doesn't cease to be a clear goalscoring opportunity because a defender might have stopped it; as long as there is a clear chance it's going in, then it's a clear goalscoring opportunity.

1) We know because it was stated on the screen during the game.
2) The following must be considered for DOGSO:
  • distance between the offence and the goal
  • general direction of the play
  • likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball
  • location and number of defenders
Given all of the above, especially the goalkeeper and covering defender I do not think it was a DOGSO. All things considered, I feel the on-field ref and VAR felt the same as opposed to the alternative, suggestion i.e. both of them not knowing what are some pretty basic laws.
