The only bit of advice that I can remember my old man giving me was - was never back an odds-on shot

(although thinking about it, he did admonish when I was the class bookie at school and was facing financial wipe-out when an outsider was winning through at Wimbledon. "Why didn't you lay it off?" was his exasperated cry - fortunately Stan Smith came to my rescue and I was spared the prospect of forking out £8 or £9, a fortune to a 15 year old in 1972)

"Never explain"

Advice given to me by Rudi Vrba,
when I turned up to a departmental event with my pregnant missus,
and I hadn't mentioned the happy event incoming to anyone at work,
and folk were surprised.

Anything Rudi says goes as far as I am concerned.
RIP, great man, friend, teacher and colleague.

Never explain. Great advice.
