What do you do? May worth telling the good people of NSC what you've been doing, and may lead you into another job

Rubbish time to be laid off though.

Good luck with the job hunting

Why would they pay you in advance? Sounds like they don't expect you to go in. If it was my responsibility I would tell you not to come in, to much risk of revenge activities. That's why people are usually escorted off the premises. ( That doesn't include you of course.)

this. you'll want a reference and in the future you might find some people in your current work elsewhere where seeking a job. dont want to be remembered as the guy who ducked out early. and if available, use work resources to help you find next job as they are obliged to.

I wouldn't even contemplate going in, phone in sick. They are probably amazed you are still turning up.

Best stick around for a reference if I was you and you will need it going forward.

Most people getting paid monthly will get paid part way through the month, with the pay covering the entire calendar month. So they are working with pay in arrears at the start of the month and having been paid in advance at the end of the month.

That is correct.

Don't worry too much about the reference they have to give you the obligatory " this person is a good employee" no matter what or no reference at all. Go into work but who give a toss about them use the time to use their computers/phones to look for new jobs and updating the CV etc. Go in when you want leave when you want use the time for your benefit not theirs.

I have been made redundant 3 times in the past and every time it has worked out for the better its a shite experience but don't let it get you down and good luck.

Past employers are restricted as to what they can say on a reference anyway. They can't (or shouldn't) for example, state that you are a lazy waste of space who is always off sick etc. Depending on the impression you make at an interview, its not always cast iron that a new employer will request a reference anyway. Many large employers have a policy, not to give personal references, but merely a letter, confirming you worked for that company from 'A Date' to 'B Date'.

On the flip side - Its been known for employers to give current employees a glowing reference of somebody they want shot of.

As mentioned, it seems bizarre they have paid you up front before you left. Either they are very trusting or very stupid.
