Hmm , I think a ref could easily miss the first one as it happened very quickly , the second one looked like a pen in real time. However, I am sure that refs are not making decisions and relying on VAR to do it for them ?

My thought as well. Both clear and you'd expect at least one on field official to spot them. They've given up and rely on VAR.
The ref took 15 minutes to stagger to the screen for the second online/touchline bollocking . . . . I can can run faster than that, so I''d guess he gave up years ago

This is exactly what's happening. As many people predicted as well. Ref's aren't giving anything in the box and letting VAR do the work for them.

It's just not plausible to me that the ref and the lino both didn't see the penalties. They saw them alright

Or whether it was deliberate and therefore a booking? Which is what he dished out.

It would be a red card if it stopped an obvious goal or goal scoring opportunity. One of Junior Orange's team mates got sent off for that 15 minutes into their match a couple of weeks ago - which was really harsh given the age and level they play at - especially as the shot wasn't even on target!

Have they changed the rules around VAR now so it can give out yellow cards too, as i always thought it was only able to be used to give a red card or no card?

If they look for a "possible red card incident", they can't give a yellow, only red card/no card. If they look at a penalty, they can give a yellow if the offence normally leads to a yellow

several minutes of play after first penalty not awarded before var kicked in. If Leicester or us had scored, would the goals have stood ??
If Leicester had scored, the goal would not have counted because the penalty happened first. If Brighton had scored, it would have counted and all the action in between would in effect be 'playing advantage'.

They didn’t help on the second one by repeatedly looking at a poor angle and starting it slightly late. There was one - behind the goal I think - where you could see O’Riley trying to get in a position to shoot and therefore off balance as the defender grabbed his shirt and swung him around. That was the vital moment.

Did I imagine it or are the post-VAR explanations flashed up on the big screens getting longer? They seemed really quite wordy yesterday

Honestly, I didn’t think either were that clear.

The first one, his arm does move towards the ball so I do think it’s probably about right, but I didn’t think that in real time and nor did anyone around me from WSU. But his arm was relatively close to his side from the replay we saw in the stadium… probably a 70/30 in favour of it being a pen.

As for the second, I thought it was incredibly soft. I thought MOR had a decent game, but why he felt the need to take a touch rather than shooting first time is beyond me. His touch wasn’t good enough, and he was going down before the contact really happened following his poor touch. As I say, I thought it was soft.
Agree re the second, though I didn’t think MOR was decent at all, too many missed chances and stray passes, went backwards after the Palace game IMO.

I also couldn’t understand why he wanted to take a touch, just a player lacking confidence

And the missed header at the end of the first half is as big a mistake as Dunk’s for their first.

In terms of Pervis and his push that looked a shout for a pen to me, then just seemingly drawn into completely distracting confrontations with McAtee really impacted his game I thought, regularly getting shouted out by Dunk and the manager to get back into positions he was supposed to be.

Yes, re Pervis, got dragged into a silly squabble

But that missed header, oh my word…….

Without VAR we’d have lost 0-2.
Precisely.

VAR was needed because the on-field ref didn't see the pens.
The VAR rubric over a pen is not the same as offside.
It doesn't declare offside/onside.
It asks the ref to take a look if the VAR ref sees the on-field ref has made a mistake.

Everything worked as it should yesterday, albeit I feel the on-field ref wasted time because he knew he was going to have to change his decision.
