You can't say the Catholic church isn't a shrewd business enterprise. I'm sure they got more than double what you paid.
I didn't take the offer. I stayed on for what was likely a once in a lifetime chance to be at an event of global relevance. Tbf the hotel wasn't run by the Vatican. I think it was a bonvoy 😉

@Wozza was also the first to call the seriousness of the Pandemic.
You're right he was there at the start. I was aware early January that we would likely be in lockdown in Europe by mid Feb. Appreciate this is after timing but I wasn't posting on nsc at the time

This is of course the fault of my step dad. Yesterday he came rushing in to announce "Pope's gone".

We all thought he was referring to the Surrey batsman in the Sussex game, but in hindsight it was clearly a premonition.

I don’t want to derail the RIP thread so this is a debate for another time.

Pope Francis spoke out in many ways to reform the RC position on many things and although nothing changed doctrinally, was a much loved Pope of integrity and passion - I think he engendered a lot of respect from Catholics and non-Catholics worldwide.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a swing back towards a much more conservative, anti-liberal Pontiff.
Too late.
Someone has already decided now is the time to praise the Catholics by invoking a bit of anti-Islam sentiment.
"He may be reactionary, but he's nowhere near as reactionary as the Muslims"
Always a good argument

Blimey. You think?

This morning, I just happened to spot the Pope news on Twitter. But I used to work in newsrooms, so got advance/inside info.

My fave moment breaking news moment on NSC was the death of Maggie Thatcher.

I was working at PA at the time, and was in a meeting with the video editor when someone stormed in with the news.

I rushed back to my desk and looked on Twitter... but there was no mention of it!

PA would have been the first media organisation to be told. So I reckon I was one of the first in the country to know.

I thought it might be a bit dodgy for me to be the one to 'break' the news online.

So I came to NSC and started a thread along the lines of "Former MP - dead!" - at 12.48 on April 8.

The BBC broke the news a minute later (!)...

.... and then I updated the heading to be more specific.

Secret revealed. When you’re not breaking news to the planet, you’re creating a decent pop song

Since it has been brought up (women priests, and which is more right wing, Catholicism or Islam, and why don't 'the left' criticize Islam's conservatism like they criticize Catholicism).....

Catholicism is the largest religion of 'the west'.
Many people who are left and liberal believe in a Catholic god.
Some who are gay or female would like to feel more part of their church.
So liberalizing the Catholic church is a topic of discussion among Catholics, with advocacy from the Catholic left.

If this seems out of kilter with Islam, there are several obvious reasons.

Islam is not a religion of 'the west'.
Few people who are left and liberal believe in Allah.
There may be gay and female 'western' Muslims who would like to feel more part of their 'church'. But I have never met any.
So liberalizing Islam is not much of a topic of discussion among Muslims, with no obvious advocacy from an Islamic left.

Of course it is possible that non-Catholic lefties criticize Catholicism for being reactionary and right wing.
Well, they would, wouldn't they?
Likewise non-Islamic lefties criticize Islam for being reactionary and right wing.

But do non-Catholic right-wingers criticize Catholicism for being reactionary and right wing?
Generally not.
Meanwhile, non-Catholic right wingers seem to bang on about Islam all the time.
Fancy that!

I'm a lapsed Catholic. I'm in favour of women priests

I'm also in favour of priests being allowed to marry but only if they love one another

I just hope they pick someone young. With our form, it would be dreadful to be in the same category as Birmingham City who never won during a papacy (Pope John Paul 1 in 1978).

Being cremated to the tune of Candle in the Wind.
Er not cremated. Buried after being put on show. Before er being put on show again.

The papal embalmer has a tough job. One amateur was so bad the pope's nose fell off and the body went green (pope pius xii).

Pope Paul vi died in the heat of high summer and apparently stunk st Peters out after being returned from castel gandalfo (the papal summer palace).

Even Pope JP2 started going black and needed touching up each night with make up.

Pope john xxiii however was put on show having been buried for 40 years and apparently looked good (well as good as he could in the circumstances)

Pope JP1 was embalmed so quickly that they couldn't tell if he had been poisoned by digitalis for threatening to tell the world about archbishop marcincus and his Vatican bank scandals

I appreciate this is reflective of teenage world knowledge, but no offence, doesn’t this type of knowledge start at home, even in an atheist household? It’s unfathomable to me that a child could reach 16 and not know, if not his name, then at the very least the role of the Pope.

But he will soon be able to vote….
